He sounds quite like Agger with his long range passing and shooting ability.

I imagine that Martinez thinks that it's a bit too soon for Stones and would like another option in that slot. He's rated at about £6m but Heitinga could make up about half of that.

It would leave us with Stones, Alcaraz and Duffy as cover for Alderweireld, Jagielka and Distin. We're probably going to need that strength in depth because half of them have next to no Premier League experience.

As a side issue, it will be interesting to see whether Roberto tries Hibbo out as the right-sided centreback.

He'd be great if we played a 3 man back line, and if needed, he can push out to right back as well. He'd be a good signing. I still think we need help elsewhere but for 6mil, he's well worth it IMO. Quality player. Honestly, if he's available for 6-7mil, and we have a chance to sign him and pass, I'd be disappointed. He'll be worth around 9mil in 2 years time IMO.

Ajax and ball playing centre backs go hand-in-hand. If this rumour is true it's a case of Martinez thinking "I need a centre back comfortable on the ball, where can I get one? Oh yeah, Ajax develop those sort of defenders for fun."

Heitinga himself is comfortable on the ball but I think the relationship is too damaged beyond repair between him and people at the club/fans.

I'd be happy with that. Heitinga's a hard sale with is poor form and high wage. I'd throw 5 and Johnny at them and see if they bite.
