There's no controversy guys. He's offside. It's not by much but that doesn't matter. It's no different than Stones clearing the ball by a couple centimeters. The ball didn't go over. The margin doesn't matter. Same with offside. It's a black and white thing.

But if you roll the tape back 1 frame from when the ball leaves the foot, he's "onside". What advantage does a player get for being a hair in front of the last defender

Very much not the spirit of football judging offsides by a mm of a shoulder.
All in favour of overturning obvious mistakes but breaking things down to the nth degree isn't football

Yep my feelings aswell - VAR should be used in common sense like penalty calls or offsides that do not involve a players arm or ponytail.

Is it in the spirit of the game to give people the benefit of the doubt on goals that get cleared a mm before they go over?

Don´t think you can celebrate a goal with any degree of confidence this season. Assistant referees really should never put their flags up if there is any sort of doubt, otherwise it will be too much in favour of defenders.
Imagine in 1982 when Marco Tardelli scored and celebrated his World Cup winner like he did and that got disallowed 5 mins later..

It doesn't matter. The rules are the rules. Change the rule if you don't like it but there is no way to do it where people won't argue that you should just ignore it if it's only broken by a little bit so what's the point?

Imagine our last minute winner at Anfield being chalked off for a shoulder being a mm offside after 5 minutes of anguish. Well, you won´t have to imagine, that´s definitely going to happen.

It's a clearly defined rule. All the ball over the line means a goal.

A player does not gain an advantage for fraction of a second where their nose is ahead of the last defender
