To be fair, should be mentioned that they use those terms for men aswell. Not saying it's not offensive just that it's not an expression based in sexism

In Argentina (basically identical culturally to Uruguay), they refer to Cruyff as 'El flaco Cruyff' (the skinny one Cruyff) for example.

'Negro' or 'Negrito' are commonly used in Argentina and Uruguay to refer to people of dark hair in a similar fashion to calling someone 'Red' if they've got ginger hair (More common in the US than the UK)

It should probably be pointed out that unlike Uruguay, Argentina never had slavery so don't have an ethnic community of African origin. I'm unaware of any nuanced differences in uses in Uruguay due to this fact. However, Argentinians do use the expressions (negro and negrito) in a more insulting manner directed at people of indigenous origin.

Spanish is a different language and context matters. I played 10 years in a league in Los Angeles which was 90 pct Mexican the other 10 pct being central american...me being the only outlier. Everybody had a nickname that was almost always based on a physical characteristic. Examples included Pelon, Gordito, Flaco, Moreno, Guero (me). Nothing negative is meant by it. To be racist, ill intent has to be involved. To be insensitive, no ill intent is necessary, but I feel there should be knowledge of potential offense and an air of damn the consequences to meet that threshold.

Banning him over this is no different than quoting someone out of context maliciously.

And I say this as someone that wishes him to get choked in his next game.

There is too much judging people by standards that are applied when convenient going on.

Directly translated it’s “thanks black” basically the same word Suarez used to Evra
Its a mistake to take the diminutive literally. More like "Thanks, person who is dark or black that I want to refer to in a friendly manner".

I know you said literally, but putting it out there. The diminutive is intentional to take any edge or offense away.

Haha. The fact that he or they if more than 1 player involved have broke coronavirus rules and took cocaine is the most important story.

Apparently it was on snapchat so will come oit sooner or later just who was involved.

Couldn't care less if he's took cocaine, at least that's only self destructive.

People who are breaking Covid guidelines are a risk to public health and should be prosecuted.

Hard to argue with this.

TBH I wasn't condemning or condoning it. Just trying to give a bit of cultural context. My wife is Argentinian as are a lot of our friends.

'Negro/a', 'Gordo/a', 'Flaco/a' are staple parts of her vocabulary. I feel a bit uncomfortable calling someone 'Gordita' even if they are Argentinian or Uruguayan.

The worst you could accuse Cavani of here is insensitivity. And that's not an open and shut case.

I've said it before, I've always considered Political Correctness to be a PR invention designed to cover up moral incorrectness.
