You know what I just don't get after playing/following this sport for 40 years? Why can't you come back from an offside position to play a ball? Burnley just had a player offside there, one of their players punted it up and he ran back to an onside position to move it about. I still never understand why him playing the ball onside is offside.

I guess because you could have a scenario where the ball is played to a player who is offside, but by the time the ball reaches him, the defender is level and he’s onside, but he has still gained an advantage through being offside when the ball was played.
But how do you gain an advantage if you are back onside when you play the ball? It's not like the player is clear through, they come from an offside position and play it in front of the defenders.

Defenders defend what’s infront of them, their dont alter their line based on an offside player. If the player is offside when it’s played, they have that advantage.
