I’m not sure how that dilutes my point. Just because they’re not their starting PL players doesn’t mean they’re not PL level players. Was a good test for our boys, we’ll take it and move on.
Well it makes it a scratch team full of fringe players (some of whom may have played in the premier league before and reserve players). Archer had never even played in the first team before last night.

Normally a scratch team is somewhat less than the sum of it's individual parts because it's just been thrown together.

But again, it’s still PL level opponents… I think you’re maybe looking too deeply into the result. Our priority is to stay in the football league since this is only our second season in it since 1972. Great experience for the lads, good night out for the fans and we’ve secured our TV money now too.

If we treated the competition seriously it was by accident. Most of the first team played as it was a risk free opportunity to try some more Vieiraball.

Yes it was remarked on how highly unusual it was to have a prem team going full strength in this competition, so early on that is, and they must be taking it really seriously.

They did say before the game that Palace deserve to go far being such a notable exception to the norm. All the rest of the prem sides were changing virtually the whole side - prioritising the league above this - and giving some 'bit' players a chance of first team action.

Watford's priority, like Palace's now Roy Hodgson has retired and they're lacking his nous, must be staying in the prem and their selection, including eight changes, showed that. It was possibly a pleasant surprise they got through anyway.

Well, apparently we dominated a lot of the game, but as usual, couldn’t score. Striker(s) urgently needed this window.

When you consider Villa went full second team, making no less than ten changes it puts it into better perspective. Any scratch team of fringe players and reserves can't perform up to standard when just thrown together. I'd have expected it to be a lot less than six tbh, even against a league two side.

I was not necessarily happy with the result but I thought we showed a lot of endeavour and if the penalty in the 1st half had been correctly given then we may have seen a more close scoreline. I will also say that for 25 minutes in the 2nd half we looked the better side but the manager did make some changes and they were obviously in mind to the weekend and the more important job of winning in the league. In normal circumstances he would have taken off Taylor (looked his age against the youth and pace of Villa) and put fresh legs in the middle for the last 20 minutes.

However, we dust ourselves down, we learn from this. Last season was a write off for us and we were lucky to stay up. This season is all about consolidating in League 2, new manager with experience at this level and a few exciting players like Zanzala, with the likes of Banks and White in the middle who are forming a nice partnership we can improve more. I think with a more a few more weeks/months and having a more legs in the middle we would not have been beaten by 6 and may have even run them close.

Not sure if you watch US games much but that goal is basically the definition of what Gyasi Zardes is. He’s like our own Niasse

I watch all the games and am based in LA, meaning I have watched him for the galaxy as well. I agree that that goal is him in a microcosm. It looks like a garbage goal.

I have always thought he was an unappreciated player. His first touch isn't the best so people understandably focus on that, and his dribbling isn't the best either, but effort, speed, desire, positioning, and creative runs were never in doubt in my mind. The USA was a different team in the gold cup after he came on as a sub in most of those games.
