that penalty Germany got was an absolute disgrace - handball from about 2 yards away when the defenders back was turned
Arm over his head is always going to be given even if you're sliding. I don't have a problem with it tbh. If you slide you give up the ability to block a chipped ball by being on the ground so having your hand up to block something in the air has to be called.

Look nothing I say will convince you of this but England playing that style of game will only beat the teams of real quality, France, Germany, Spain, Brazil, Belgium and the like, 2 or 3 out of ten times. That isn't the worst record in the world but whether that is acceptable for a team aiming to win the big tournaments is debatable.

This summer's World Cup while good for confidence and a really significant achievement considering our team and it's many flaws, was lacking in that the beaten opposition wasn't the best, but it did give Southgate a good starting point in his mission to develop a winning team of real quality.

I'm not deluded, we're nowhere near where we want to get to, he has seen the flaws, knows our shortages of talent in crucial areas, and has identified a core of young players he hopes to take along with him. He's adding variatuon to our playing styles and playing four at the back as a viable alternative when the three is found out and not fit for purpose. To vary within a game or dependant on opposition, to be comfortable with either, to be more versatile.

Of course its early days still, there's lots of areas we can improve, a midfield playmaker the most obvious, Barkley showed real promise last night and the core of young talent could provide the answers.

He does look like he has the planning in place, for me last night was a thoroughly merited victory against real quality who had murdered Croatia with six very recently. Spain desperately wanted it, and you could see just how intense and furious they were with their performance.

It was hugely significant, a real step forward and a famous victory.

You have a very different outlook to me as I've said.

England used a sequence of 18 consecutive passes in scoring the first goal. Eventually it involved a long flat pass from Pickford into Kane in the midfield, who then sent it wide to Rashford and the goal resulted via his threaded long crossfield ball to Sterling, but that was right at the end of a long series of passing possession, and accurate working of the Spanish cover to create the space.

Eighteen consecitive passes and somehow it didn't touch a single defender or midfielder, they actually did it by magic. That's one up for Southgate then.

The tactical switch since the victory over Switzerland to four at the back is proving worthwhile.

Spain had five shots on target counting ineffectual ones to England's three, they always dominate possession.

Having read a few posts on this and other forums, there does seem to be a very strong anti-England brigade, who seem to share a begrudging, almost mean spirited attitude where England are concerned, giving only faint praise where absolutely unavoidable and, almost as if through clenched teeth, qualifying it with as many negatives as they can.

A sort of 'belittle any victories and make hay when they lose' attitude.

Even about last night..

I keep seeing it was a 'friendly' from the anti-England brigade. That may suit the whole 'big wow' narrative but it's just absolute bollocks isn't it?

Whether anybody respects the Nation's League or not, it's a competitive game and I have to say I've been enjoying the NL.

It was an outstanding result by England and it does, in my view, confirm that England belong at their ranking and maybe, just maybe they deserved to make the WC semi and it wasn't just some big fluke.

I don't share this negative mindset at all, as to me it's not at all generous and it's definitely not a particularly good look either.
Brilliant post mate, well written.
