In modern footie? Defensive mid. No team wins anything without a brilliant one. Plus it’s my fave position. Busquets was my idol when I was playing.
This is a misconception because all the best teams also have brilliant players in every other position. In my opinion at least. Busquets isn’t Busquets without Messi. Rodri is the latest one who isn’t Rodri without KDB and Haaland. They’re good players but to me in a world where they are the best player on the team and other teams have players as good I’d bet the teams whose best player was a top class attacker would be better. Unfortunately football is not and never will be that world.

Having seen how the mid-90s side was destroyed by Joe Parkinson getting injured, I have to say I disagree with this. You only realise their importance when they aren't there.

Hard disagree. I'm discussing who you build your team around not necessarily who the teams best player is.

Rodri isn't City's best player but they're a mess when he doesn't play. Same for Busquets. Same when Casemiro was at Madrid.

If you have and XI of average players and get to put one world class player into it I’m not picking a defensive midfielder.

Fwiw Everton basically did this exact experiment with Gueye that year after Rom left.

God forbid I have the insane opinion that attackers are more important than midfielders

Its a team mate. Sometimes a functioning team, doing ok, can be disrupted if a key, but not particularly great player is missing. England had it in a tournament when Jordan Henderson had to sit a few games out.

And you do realise that midfields win matches?

Midfields win matches is one of those things people say and it sounds all smart and profound but doesn’t actually mean anything at all.

What wins matches is money so that you can buy a team of players that are man for man superior to the team of players you’re playing against 95% of the time. The point I’m trying to make which seems to be lost here per usual is that if the money wasn’t so out of balance it might not break that way.

This is the most American post I've seen in ages.

A high class defensive midfielder improves everyone around him. A high class attacker doesn't, and is relied upon to win games solo.
But he can win games solo which the DM can’t do. Busquets passing a bunch of balls into McNeil isn’t going to get you to the same place passing it to Messi will! Not to mention receiving the passes is a skill itself. These guys can play their tippy tap stuff because of who’s around them as much as their own abilities.
