studs up in the calf, way away from the ball?

VAR confirms red

correct decision
No force in the challenge though. I remember this being the key to fouls like that not being a red. Unless that only applies to Liverpool players committing red card fouls on Everton players

there was quite a bit of force there, it wasnt a leg-breaker by any means but to mess up the back of his leg it doesnt have to be

I said in another thread, it's to some extent commendable that Kompany wants Burnley to play good, attractive football; it worked for him/them last year.

But the standard of the PL is a huge step-up, and the top teams will undo them quite easily if they carry on this, as will most of the mediocre sides.
Burnley really don't even try to defend at times, need to sort that out otherwise they will struggle. They did actually look decent in patches though tbf and it's not an ideal game to start the season.

Of course there was force. Fortunately Walker was moving away which negated a fair bit of it. Throw that tackle into a planted leg and you'll see how much force there was.

I thought it was understandable. It's easy for us watching on TV to shout red as there's no consequence whatsoever for us getting it wrong. We've all got a shout wrong in real time.

A ref has to be convinced beyond a doubt to show a red straight off and he's not sat there watching it on TV from the same angle we are.

I don't know, looked obvious in real time - very much like the Allan tackle

I think it depends on the refs angle. Can he see clearly how high the boot is from where he is? The TV cameras are in the gantries above the stands / at the side of the pitch and while I don't know where the ref was he's definitely not seeing it from that angle and could even have other players crossing his line of sight at the time.

The late foul from behind I'd imagine he can definitely see from wherever his position on the pitch was but the element that turns it from yellow to red is maybe harder for him to see than TV viewers and refs shouldn't be producing reds based on guesswork or likelihoods.

If VAR had looked at it and not intervened then yeah, we're in the realms of truly awful decision making.

indeed, point of contact being important. His angle vs the worlds. ref's don't have zoom for their initial repeat viewings either.
initially I thought he was caught on the trailing boot. but I had had three or four pints of lager at that point so my judgement was mildly impaired.

Kane should never have gone to the one team Bundeliga, the Premier League is MUCH more competitive.

Man City 2023-2024 Premier League Champions.

End thread.
Certainly looks like the PL is going that way. But I think when Pep leaves City things will get more level again
