Of course Gerrard will he's the bloody captain, plus he's the only starter from tonight's starting midfield with regular tournament experience.

That does not mean he should have a divine right to start though. There's plenty of other players in the squad who can take the captains armband and regardless of tournament experience, Stevie G's legs have gone. He may well make all three group games but he will be well off the pace come the last one, especially in that heat.

Rooney is awful for England though. Yet to score in a World Cup and he's 28 now! I have visions of him being pink in the face running around a yard off the pace before being hooked off on 70 minutes.

Honestly I wouldn't start him, he just doesn't look fit enough. I don't know if Lallana plays central at Southampton but if he does I'd play either him or Ross there and free up a wing role for Oxlaide-Chamberlain or Milner

His legs haven't gone by any means but it will be his final tournament I feel, much rather have him alongside Henderson than have say Wilshere in whose likely to get overrun. Gerrard gives you an extra defensive line when needed to allow his sidekick to push forward

I beg to differ Sir, but hey that's what football is all about, opinions..

hope nosejam isnt the fallguy in all this.
mikey has shaved off his beard already.
heard them paper plane throwers are being harshly treated lately.
no mercy by the judges and that.
to think i was nearly gonna go as well.
with my record couldnt take that chance really.
thank god for the itv.townsend as well.

I thought that was the sort of squad he has picked Eggs. Shaw, Baines, Ross, Lallana, the Arsenal lads, Sturridge.

My view is the Gerrard/Henderson axis looks, well, wooden.

As ever, will take your views more seriously than any on here! Including mine.;)

...agree that he has the right types, Roydo, he just needs to get the balance right. Accepting that you probably need one blocker in front of the back four (the job Carsley did for Everton), ahead of that I think he should go for the best he has.

...I wonder if that was his last ever game at Wembley.
