He's average at whatever he does, even his fans can't define his position for me, he's going to get a lot of stick on the internet I'm afraid, because he is going to get more game time than his ability deserves, he clearly has favourite status with the manager, we were just lucky he wasn'y fully fit when besic got his chance. If he was here as back up and nothing more, that would be sound, but while he keeping kev/pienaar/besic/lennon out the team without backing that decision up, he's gonna cop it

The thing about Cleverley is that he wouldn't look out of place in a relegation threatened team. He's a plodder, an average player, can do a job in making up the numbers of a squad... Anything more than that and you'll be very disappointed.

My preferred positions for him is left wing when we set up in a 4231 because I think he links up well with Baines.

Don't think Lennon plays at all well on the left, Pienaar is unfortunately at the end of his career and genuinely don't think Martinez sees Cleverley as the same role in the team as Besic.

Kev is the interesting one, personally don't think he links up well with Baines at all and prefer him on the right but Lennon/Deulofeu are best there as well.

Anyone know what he 'does best'?

That's not one season, or a couple of seasons - that's his entire career; including a 55 game spell at United, when he was effectively carried and loathed by the fanbase.

Literally not good in any position, or judged by any available metric.

Kev refuses to hold a ball up...that's Baines kryptonite. Why he won't, I don't know, Leighton would be more than happy to play off him and set him loose after getting up the field. Although Kev would probably drift in and shoot it all to shyt in the final 3rd.

It's a strange one...I think he is an ok squad player...but he can do a few roles competently and none 'phenomenally'

Feels a bit lightweight in cm for me when he is in there. He is decent on the ball though and has an eye for a pass..sometimes...so definetely useful player to beef up the numbers.

For some reason the chemistry between the two seems all wrong.

Kev and Rom can play some nice one touch passes between them but it rarely seems to happen between Leighton and Kev. Odd as they are both talented and have been on the team together a while so should be able to anticipate each others moves.

He has six assists in his entire career.

For context - Gareth Barry has managed more than that in a single season at least twice.

Ah yes but Gaz Bas is the 'greatest English player ever' or something like that...

Unfair to compare old tom to a player like that!!!!

I have to say I find it utterly staggering that anyone can consider Cleverley a decent player.

Every statistic available shows how poor a player he is; how little he contributes in every position.

Aroune Kone, one of the most staggeringly inept players we have had in many a year, has four assists this season.

Cleverley, touted as a possible replacement on the left for Pienaar, has six in total, across his entire career, since 06/07.

This despite having played for United and an Everton side which scores loads of goals.

He's so good on the ball, he isn't even in the top 10 for pass accuracy at the club this season - here's the stats

What more evidence do people need?

I actually think he's decent, but by god he was poor against City.

For me his best position is possibly in the advanced central role, but he's not on Barkley's level. Out wide he does a job but hasn't got the creativity or spark that Mirallas has. In defensive midfield he's not got the nous of Barry, tenacity of McCarthy or composure of Besic.

I'd probably play him wide left in games where we really need someone working up and down the line, but it's tough to say exactly what he offers the team other than a bit of hard work. His passing is decent and he's found Lukaku well a couple of times but going forward the other night he looked lost. Doesn't do enough in the final third to warrant a starting position with Mirallas, Barkley and Deulofeu fit in my opinion.

Fair do's on the assists/goals but the passing stats are a bit harsh Orly.

There are a bunch of players that are seperated by fractions of perventage points around the mid 80s - Baines 84.8 8, Kev is on 84.5% and Clev on 84.1% and RFM on 84% for example.

Are those Howard's career stats?
