He's absolutely pointless. He doesnt do a lot wrong, because he doesnt do much of anything. He just...exists. Like playing with 10 men.

Well with Besic out and McCarthy only half fit after a long injury who would you have put in there? Gibson? Aye, I'm sure the dynamic pairing of Barry and Gibson would have stopped them stone dead. Osman? The same. Personally I'd have seen what Stones was like in there but he was covering at right back for the unfit Coleman, and it would have probably been too much of a risk.

Well the dynamic partnership of Osman and Gibson were able to beat City 3-1 on aggregate in the 2012/13 season. Maybe you should lobby for us to get Bolt or Farrah in if all you're looking for is dynamism. Winning matches would do for me.

Said it before the game but we have been at our most vulnerable without Mccarthy or Besic. Our worst defence leakages coincided exactly with James' injury at Bournemouth and went on until Besic came in.

That however, doesn't mean Cleverley is rubbish. He's just not a great defensive midfielder. Against top sides that will only be exaggerated. He's a technically excellent player though and a brilliant passer of the ball. Also one of the only players prepared to have a dig at the ref. I like him.

Shows how fickle we are, it wasn't that long ago we were all saying how well he was playing.

It a similar thing with Stones...got to take into account the fact the team is not playing great as a whole.

If both Cleverly and Stones were older and more established here I wouldnt expect the current situation to affect performances that much and would be critical if playing poorly when needed to step up and make a difference. (not saying clev is young...just that he settling in)

As it is, its not a suprise to me that they might struggle in a struggling team.

McCarthy has been off form or injured for a long time now, and I think this has been absolutely crucial. He was having a very good game when he got injured...looking like his old self. Hope he sees out the season now and helps tighten us up.

If he can, it would be a more solid platform for players like Cleverley to perform.

In many ways we can point to that moment he limped off at Bournemouth as the point our season turned. We were absolutely dominant in that match up until that point, and coming off several good performances.

This is the issue though isn't it? He's yet another one of those in our squad that won't take us to the next level. A mid table at best type quality of player.
For me, if we are ever going to go up the table the Cleverleys in our squad can't be in the starting 11. Depth players.

I like Cleverley, imo @RFUS summed up his strengths well, but mentality has always been a bit of a weakness for him in that he tends to play well when the rest of the team does but rarely when they don't. His style of play probably plays a part as well in that he works best with good movement and quick passers around him.

Lol at everyone slagging him off now. He's a very good player and has been great for us. Filling in for McCarthy/Besic when they're both injured is him just doing a job for us because it's absolutely necessary, he's not good at that position and he had a poor game generally anyway. Easy scapegoat though because he's not a flashy player.

the sign of a very limited footballer I'm afraid
