However, Sherwood admitted Villa avoiding relegation could be crucial to his side being able to attract the player, with his side five points clear of the bottom three going into their final five league matches. “I’ve been pleased with Tom,” said Sherwood. “I really like him and like what he adds to the side. He adds a lot of energy, gets back round goalside, links the ball very well.

“He certainly is one of the names I put on the team-sheet straight away. We’re certainly interested in talking to Tom, when the time is right. “Tom and his representatives, and Aston Villa, are willing to put this on the backburner because they know how important it is to stay in the Premier League. After all Tom wouldn’t want to join the club in the Championship.
“I think there is a good chance we will try and do a deal if it’s right for both parties.”

The question Cleverly and his agent have to ask themselves is if this recovery is a sign of better times ahead or just the galvanising temporary effect of a new manager.

If Everton are in the market for that type of player then Cleverly represents very good value as a 25/26 year old English player on a free transfer.
I wonder however if the manager feels that bringing in players in that position may not be necessary if Ledson , Dowell etc are nearly ready.

Its really got to be one of the odder signing should it go through. We ALREADY have FOUR players playing his position and another 2-3 in the youth team who show real promise. What, exactly, does he bring to the table that ANY of the other players dont have? Martinez always made the point of bringing through 1-2 youth team players every season, has he brought anyone through this season? Garbutt, maybe? Whats the point of signing a player to a position a great youth team player plays as well, bringing ANOTHER impediment to the progress of the team?

I think he could end up staying at Villa if they avoid the drop. Tbh it makes sense for his career right now as he'd get regular games to get his career going, with us he'd play now and again as a squad player which isn't what he needs or probably wants at his age.
