Tom Cleverley’s renaissance at Aston Villa is set be rewarded with a recall to the England squad. Cleverley is in line for a return to Roy Hodgson’s squad after his impressive return to form, 15 months after over 10,000 people signed an online petition calling for the midfielder to be dropped from the national team.
Hodgson made a personal check on the 25-year-old at
St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday and is considering naming him in the squad for the games against the Republic of Ireland and has not featured for England since the friendly defeat to Germany in November 2013 but he has been revitalised at Villa since the appointment of Tim Sherwood. Before Villa’s game at Southampton he had scored three goals in three games and
is due for talks over a permanent deal with Villa later this month.
Sherwood, the Villa manager, said: “He deserves to get back into that England squad. He works very hard at it and deserves his chance again. I think Roy is a big fan of him.
"I think he was labelled the new Paul Scholes when he first came through at United. There was a lot of pressure on him when he sprung onto the scene. I don’t know about his performances before I came in but he has been very consistent over the past few months. “Roy has got to make that decision, he’s got a lot of good midfield players to choose from. Both Tom and Fabian Delph are not doing each other any harm. Their work rate is fantastic. “The groundsman is the only one who’s disappointed with them because they keep wearing out the pitch!”
