£50k/week, FML. For tom cleverley.

If he sees out his contract with us he will collect £13 million from Everton Football Club.

Willing to wait and see how he performs. He's played in a lot of big games in his short career and I like that he has that in the locker. Hopefully he can get on the ball and make things happen in the final third especially. A grafter too.

It's very good in the sense that Martinez has, true to his word, moved quickly to get the ball rolling on the transfer front. I'd be inclined to believe him also when he implies that the quality players (by that I mean players there'll have to be a decent cash outlay on) will arrive later in the window, so we have to be patient for that until after they get back from Singapore. Still, it'd be nice if another free/cheaper addition were made to the squad to take on tour and acclimatise with us. If the big fees are going toward a CB and playmaker, I'd like to see us snap up a decent forward on loan to back up Lukaku/Kone.

I hate the argument "he's never even kicked a ball for us".
Neither has Messi, but I still know he'd be boss for us.

Cleverley is not, and never will be close to good enough for Everton.

There is a gem in there somewhere. Go back and read articles about him from 2011/2012, it's crazy how highly he was spoken of before he stalled.

We can't buy top-class players in their prime, so we can get top-class players in 3 ways: buy young with potential (Lukaku), the academy (Barkley), or try and revive stuttering careers (Cleverley).

All of them are gambles but that's why we can afford it. In the career-revival category, Cleverley is as good a bet as we're gonna get: Martinez has coached him before and has been watching him for years, plus he's free.

I'm more than happy to be proven wrong by him though, and will wish him all the luck in the world in doing so.

yeah I agree, he's pretty cheap for an England International

how much are we paying Hibbert/Gibson/Osman for not playing?

Gibson and Osman are 10x the players cleverley will ever be. Hibbert I agree is a waste of wages but at the start of the season we have 0 cover for Coleman. We've got plenty of central midfielders.

I'm not a big fan of cleverley but he did look a good player at Wigan and had his best season to date under Martinez so hopefully he can get career back on track here

He signed way back.

I agree Gibson and Osman are probably better (Gibson certainly) but I'd rather pay people to play than be permanently injured.

We need strengthening all over the pitch. Two players for each position. There are a few that can't be relied on to be counted as that because of near permanent injuries.

But that's just the way things are today. There are some shocking players on similar wages or more and that will only increase with so much money coming in to clubs now via these TV deals.

Seems obscene to us, the working man on the street who takes home around 400 quid a week, but that's the way it's going unfortunately.

Would love to see some sort of salary cap come in to the game but it's never likely to see the light of day I don't think.
