Tom Cleverley

Roberto Martinez believes that there is no better technical English player than Tom Cleverley, as Everton’s manager challenged the former Manchester United player to score the 10 goals a season that can make him “one of the most sensational players in Premier League history”.

Good old brown shoes.
Got us 8 mil off a free

Brilliant profit for a mediocre squad player.

Good luck to him, seemed a decent bloke who never had any specific calamities that cost us big games like countless other players who stole a living here in the past. Just don't ever play well against us and we're cool.

£8m profit in 18 months is fantastic business for such an average footballer.
We have been paying his salary for 18 months though and there may also have been a signing on fee seeing as he came on a free.

I wasn't particularly pleased when Martinez first bought Cleverley but I thought he had a bright start up until he got injured against Spurs. Sadly since then he showed little of that early form and, apart from the last minute goal away to Newcastle, I can't recall him having much positive impact. I can understand that RK wanted to take a look at him before making his mind up, and personally believe he gave him too long. But at least he came to the right decision in the end and did well to offload him so quickly once he had done.

Don't think Cleverley deserved some of the vitriol on here. He's just not good enough for Everton, where we are now and where we hope to be. But it's not that long ago we had far worse players putting on a blue shirt.

This is fair. I think Cleverley is the sort of lad who plays well in a better side where there is a spot he can blend in too. The start of last season, when Lukaku, Barkley and Deulofeu were flying and he could just fill in solidly was perfect for him. When their form dipped he wasn't good enough on his own to win us games, or rugged enough to play deeper.

I had hoped he could follow an Adam Lallana style transformation under Koeman. Prior to Klopp Lallana resembled Cleverely. Some international experienced but lacking a yard of pace and a goal output. However a hard worker, good at pressing, could chip in with goals and assists if not being prolific. I think Lallana is just that bit more physical though and is able to play in a midfield 3.

but you get that with every player you sign irrespective of free or not

True, but I was responding to a post saying that we were making a tidy £8m profit in him. All I was pointing out is that when you sign somebody on a free you often pay premium wages or signing on fee or combination of both.

In fairness mate, although they may have a similar style, I think Lallana is just an all round better player. He has improved under klopp I agree, but I also liked him when he was at Southampton too.

Yes and thats certainly been borne out. I do think though, that there was a lot of similarities as younger players, when Cleverely was at Wigan for example he looked very talented.

Just as a side note, they are similar ages. Lallana played once for the U21s but Cleverley played 16 times, so was clearly better thought of in his younger days.

Just shows hey.
