He's not great.

He's not terrible.

Sometimes he's good. Sometimes he's not so good.

Still early days - can't we just support the lad an see how he gets on?

^ This said, I think the shout to give him captaincy is a stupid one.

With it comes increased expectation, and I'm not convinced he should be second captain after Coleman, captaining a side that has Walcott, Sigurdsson, Gueye etc.

Some thoughts on y'day/overall

Game completely passed him by first 20
Even though he wasn't playing well, he encouraged/organised more experienced players
He grew into game and was more involved/ambitious 2nd half
Like most of our players, he's scared of the crowd and plays it too safe when there are options on
Expectations are too high. He's not a playmaker but showed leadership/ambition when others (Schneiderlin) have abdicated any responsibility to play the ball forward
Not sure if captaincy will help/hinder his development, we'll see
Personally think he's behind Cook/Foden, but they're both exceptional young players
We have some of the worst/toxic fans in PL. I'd be terrified to play at Goodison

I want to speak about the captaincy and don't want to create a new thread for it. I don't want to upset Eggs and others.

So yea, captain of a Premier League side is...or used to be a massive feat but these days it seems the armband can be passed around. Is that because nobody listens to captains anymore? I didn't see Davies speaking out or controlling the team. He's too young to be captain because he doesn't have the experience on the field and is still learning the game. How can he be in a position to tell others what to do? Brings to me another point, is the captain role at Everton now a farce? It used to be something worn with honour but it's like they're taking turns to be captain sometimes it's become a bit of a joke.

Fair post I’d say.

I don’t think any one of us fans would have had Davies down as a captain ahead of the likes of Pickford, Gylfi even Gana at this point.

But worth remembering we don’t know the players as well as we like to think we do. We don’t know a thing about their character in the dressing room or off the pitch. Heck we don’t really know it on the pitch either.

I’d question that if Davies wasn’t a local lad would he be captain? Doubt it.

And does being local put more pressure on him to perform anyway? Should the captain have to from the area?

I look at someone at the very top. Vincent Kompany. The very being of what a captain should be for me. He’s definitely not a Manc.

I think right now he's a pretty limited player, that will at times hinder as well as help the side. I think that's clear to everyone, regardless of what they post on here. If we start him in every game this season, he'll finish it a very experienced player for his age, but he will almost certainly cost us points.

In something like an ideal world, we'd be a top 6 side with a top 6 midfield, Tom Davies wouldn't have had anywhere near as many games for Everton and he'd be learning his trade out on loan somewhere, costing/gaining that side points.

I think that's where the frustration comes from. He's not yet top 6 quality. He's probably not even top half quality, yet Evertonians won't be satisfied with the team until they're challenging the top teams. It's not an unreasonable frustration, given the money we've spent but it's obviously not Davies' fault we're not troubling them at the moment. His commitment can't be questioned and he's a genuine Evertonian who has time for the fans, which is refreshing. That's why he's captain and I think he's a good choice for it, when he's actually in the XI. I think Silva wants a dressing room full of leaders rather than just one and who better than a local lad and Evertonian.

What he does exactly? He is least impactful from our midfielders, for most of the game he is basically invisible on the pitch. He is also awful from the defensive point of view, just one tackle today (Gana got 8, Gylfi 4, Richarlison 4) and he always seems to position himself badly, not covering his players and always late to help teammates. At least his passing accuracy today was quite ok but with tougher opponents it drops horribly.
Most ground covered of anyone on the field
89% pass completion
Yeah invisible
Stop being lazy and following the crowd and watch the lad

You say its a farce? You say its something that used to be worn with honour?

Who would respect the armband more?
A kid who has been at the club since 10, through the ranks, growing up supporting everton and idolising past everton captains?

Or some fella who once his contract is up will be out the region as quick as possible not known who everton were before they came to this country and is probably only at everton because of the fat wedge they offered

If davies wasent local he wouldnt know the club inside out, wouldnt of been here for the past 10 years, wouldnt have that respect and admiration for the armband and wouldnt see it as much of an honour

So yeah if davies wasent local he wouldnt have been given the armband.

Its all irelevant anyway, proper leaders, proper captains lead teams with an armband or not! When gerrard got liverpools armband it was to keep him at the club, were as a proper leader - hyppia, kept leading the team the way he knew.

Captained us in 2 league games, we have played well in those 2 league games. Alls ok surely?

It doesn't matter if he's a local lad or not. Leadership is not something everybody has and I'm yet to see it from him but in my post I mention his lack of experience as a player so how can he read the game with knowledge? Do you think Labone and Ratcliffe were boyhood blues?
