2018/19 Tom Davies

Yet over on Fulham forums they are complaining their midfield didn't get into the game because Gana and Davies were dominating.

I don't get how some people don't make the connection between Sigurdsson looking a lot better and the fact that he is receiving the ball more. And the reason he is receiving the ball more is that:

1. We have Digne/Richarlison and Kenny/Walcott which are forcing teams that play a midfield 3 to spread wider to cover.
2. This means our midfield 2 are up against 2 rather than 3 players most of the time.
3. Which means they are seeing more of the ball and have more time to pick their passes. TD has been at roughly 70% pass accuracy all season but now up to nearly 90% last game.
4. In turn this means passes to GS are easier to pick and GS has more space.

Tom is a good young player who managers love because he follows instructions well and does the job they ask of him.

We have a 20 year old Evertonian captaining our club and looking better than £20m signings and people have a go constantly.

This exactly mate. Well said.

It's strange how all the young lads are crap yet they all played some part in each goal yesterday(sorry DCL won the penalty). All rubbish though never going to make it. Koeman, Allardyce, Unsie and now Silva just enjoy picking him so he can take all the abuse obviously. Davies is nowhere near as bad as being made out, yes he needs to improve as does any 20 year old.

Played in every game we won last season.

Same again this season.

What a stupid argument. Why do people here always tend to use the certain stats/numbers/etc. in the way that they favour their opinion while being blind on every other which proves them wrong. And how about all the games where he played and we get totally demolished last season? And all the games where he played this season where we didn't manage to beat theoretically worse sides? Connecting dots? What dots? We lost against West Ham because we lacked Davies in our squad? And how he would help us there? We lost because of our horrible defensive mistakes, DCL on the wing and lack of finishing. Also, West Ham was that day and probably overall is much better and stronger team than us which they proved in their next two games. Davies isn't creating chances, his passing accuracy against better opposition is awful, the game is bypassing him and he does not contribute in the defence (1-2 tackles per game) while he plays almost at the same position as Gana (who can get 10+ in his better games, avg. 6+ this season) but on the right side of the pitch. You can observe quite often how teammates prefer other options, more difficult passes rather than passing to uncovered Davies in front of them as he won't be able to do anything productive with it. There are moments in game where he has less touches than everybody on the pitch besides goalkeepers and centre halves. He offers nothing and he is definitely not a one who won us these games.

Because we have no other options, I predict a change of approach in January when Marcel delivers some quality

Of course, ideally he's not a starter and when Gomes is fit probably won't be but he's not a total washout as some say, he just finds himself thrust into the limelight because of lack of options like you say. I still think that goal against City gave people unrealistic expectations of the lad though. Time will tell how good he's going to be.

Funny how some of our midfielders get every excuse under the sun made for them: he needs to be in this position, in this formation, he needs pace all around him, he can only play with x player with him etc. Davies meanwhile is often played out of position with a whole range of midfield partners in different formations and yet never gets a pass on here.

In the shock of the century Davies didn’t look great when Everton as a team were playing poorly but looked in control when Everton as a team played well.

Within a few weeks of the season, in front of a new coaching staff, he’s moved himself in front of Schneiderlin in the manager’s thoughts. How many central mids has this supposedly league one standard player seen off now to keep his place?

You called him a lazy coward 2 days ago and now you’re saying other people are unnecessarily nasty about him. Some top flip flopping that.

Can’t remember if I included Davies in my lazy coward rant but don’t think I did. It depends how you’re looking at it anyway. Overall I think ALL our midfielders are not the standard required for us to be in the top 6. But when you accept that, if you’re comparing them relatively then I don’t understand the criticism Davies gets as I believe he shows a lot more than any of the others in that area. So yes, it’s not flip flopping to criticise a player when he plays badly then praise him when he plays well. I’ve been consistent most of the time in defending Davies against what i think to be ridiculous criticism like he’s a league one standard player but I can simultaneously hold the view that he’s part of a cohort of midfielders who aren’t currently good enough.

Nah you didn’t specifically name him I was just being mischevious. I agree with what you’re saying.

Lads, it’s not his fault that he’s 20 years old and captains Everton between brushing his hair and taking photos.

I know you’re all fat, bald pub players who acted hard for 40 years and got nowhere, but stop being jealous.
This is the main reason why most of our young players get grief.

They see a young lad earning huge money, driving whatever car they want and dating any girl they want and they just can't handle it. Their faces go pure premium gammon.

Lad I was better than Davies when I was 20, but then me knee went, no good him yano. Honestly I got a game for the school and everything, Tranmere scouts came to watch me.

EDIT: Just looked it up there and he’s (apparently) played 64 Premier League games at just turned 20. Remarkable that.
