2018/19 Tom Davies

subjective

he is young - check

he has potential - check

now the big question.... has he lived up to expectations .....

nope

there are plenty of young talented lads with bags of potential, the problem is 95% of them never make the grade as a first teamer in a prem club

he has been given a chance luckily at everton but he has not lived up to the hype imo

What chance has he had? Dropped by koeman so he could shoe horn his new toys into the team. Then unsworth, god knows what happened there. Then under allerdyce who had him play as more of a defensive midfielder.

Then forced to play out wide or forced to play defensively. He's a forward thinking cm. The lad likes to play forward passes and try to create. Tell me when has he had the chance to do that last season?

Barkley never got anything like this. He had excuse after excuse made for him when he was in his 4th full season as a first team player, whenever people so much as suggested he wasn’t playing that well. Davies is getting genuine bile from all angles after a poor first full season in professional football as a teenager.

The Barkley comparison was more aimed towards one of our academy players getting a hard time. To be honest apart from his first season under Martinez Barkley got the abuse every other season. It wasn't just his fourth and in that fourth he was our second best player.

Agree with you about Tom though.

Match going fans groan and moan at the senior players, probably more than is necessary admittedly. But the likes of Davies usually get a bit more leeway being relatively new to the league. The internet however is different. People want to be able to say “told you he was crap lad before anyone else lad” more than they actually want to observe the progression of one of our young players. He may turn out to be not good enough, of course, but I’m at least willing to give it a chance.

He doesn't get stick at the games though? It's like DCL, people might come on the forums and say they're not up to scratch but to hear some people you'd think the crowd were booing their every touch.

It's absolutely not an Everton fan thing, it's just the way the world is now. The internet gives us all a platform and so you hear more opinions than you used to.

In my opinion Davies is a decent prospect but - as we so often do - people hyped him up to be something he's not and are no disappointed that he isn't living up to the expectations they had of him. And to say this never happened to Barkley is so wrong it's difficult to know if you're joking. He got pelters on here for years.

I'm a STH mate and everything that lad does gets a groan or a f off davies or a you're sh**e you lad. All the time, it's ridiculous.

Not were I sit, bolasie gets less abuse then davies

So am I and I would agree 100% with @mikeh72 in that they all get moaned and groaned at (this happens at every ground I've ever been to) but if anything the young players are given a much easier time than the more senior players.

I think I disagree with you about the type of player he is though. Yes he's forward thinking, but in my opinion he's better playing deeper and passing forwards than he is playing as an attacking midfielder. Also I don't recall Tom Davies playing out wide at all last season, save one game at right back.

I said I see him as a cm not a attacking cm mate. Just he has a attacking mind.

He played there a few times. Mainly when Kenny was playing. More of a right midfielder then say the more advanced way we play Walcott.

The positivity remark was more aimed at the when at the match and I wasn't just referencing a forum but the everton fan base on the whole.

I don't rate him because he's young I rate the lad because he's obviously got the potential to be a very good player for us. It's not clapping along blindly it's showing support to the younger lads in the squad.

I swear to god it's like people don't understand that young players need to develop to get better. They need to make mistakes to learn from them and yes they will have bad games but as long as they show progressions we should support them. He's just turned 20 for Christ sake, he's been in the squad for 18 months and been managed by 3 different managers in that time.

I think some evertonions think our youth walk out of the academy, in to the first team and are either Messi straight away or crap and need to be sold right away.

Not at all. Just don't particularly rate Davies, which isn't a crime as a supporter. There will have been people on Liverpool forums making the exact same arguments you are in favour of Jay Spearing a few years ago.

It's a big year for Davies. A repeat of last year's performances and it's difficult to make an argument for him being part of the squad going forward. Right now, age is the main thing he has on his side because his other attributes don't stand out.

Yeah but you said Allardyce played him defensively. I don't think he did, he just played him deeper, where I think he's actually better.

No suggestion of him playing out wide in any game on here: http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tom-davies/leistungsdaten/spieler/314210/plus/1?saison=2017

First game of the season he's down as Left mid but that was in a midfield 3 so not wide as such. The info on there tallies up with my memories of it.

What people were saying about spearing that he's young and needs to he given a chance to make mistakes and develop into a better player. Good! Nice to know not all Liverpool fans are completely mental.

What I'm taking from your posts is that you seem to think, that I think davies is good. I'm not, I think he's average atm and inconsistent. I think he had a bad season last season and I think he struggles when asked to play anywhere else but in cm.

I do however see the potential in the lad and also acknowledge the fact that everyone had a bad season last season for us. I'm also willing to accept that a 19-20 year old lad is going to make mistakes and be inconsistent and have a few stinkers. I'm also going to support him and hope that he can pull it through and progress and learn from those mistakes.

IIRC he played wide right at Old Trafford in the league last year. And TBF was one of our better players on the day.

So if he's playing cm and he's pushed deeper then he's playing as a defensive midfielder, isn't he? Where he was mainly used as legs for Rooney. Which pretty much choked and creativity out of the lad.

I said he was playing as a right midfielder still classed as the midfield 3 but more pushed out to the right to link up with Kenny. You might not remember it but I do. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree or maybe I'm just explaining it well. He wasn't played as a proper cm is my point.
