Hmmmm. He was poor today as was Pickford, Digne, Coleman, Richarlison, Gomes etc. So pick on the local lad who cost us F. A.

Not into this OTT thrashing of young players just to annoy the fans who overhype them....and I always want us to have a local lad around the team....but he was utterly terrible today and I've noticed a trend with him. He nips in to get the ball and actually gets a touch, but his opponent still comes away with it. Happens so much. Like he is tackling half-heartedly.

I see this too. He just isn't strong enough/clever about how he uses his body to win possession. He will lose every 50/50 which is not what you want from your centre mid.

Yeah I was disappointed with him too today. Just looked completely out of his depth. It's really frustrating how our youngsters just can't grasp opportunities.

It all goes back to the coaches. They are a joke.

Still trying to work out what type of player he is, is he box to box, is he a defensive midfielder? I don't think he even knows at times. Also, his second touch of the ball always seems to be a tackle because his first touch is so bad.
We just need to move on, yes he is young but I just cannot see how he can develop to anything we need him to be.

The only option at this moment in time seems to be a loan mate, if possible to a prem club, the likes of a Burnley, Brighton etc, then see if he shows any progress, as you say though, the only option might be to just move him on permanently.

Will never be physical enough to compete and dominate the midfield, lacks pace to take himself away from opponents, poor in the air at both ends of the field at this elite level. Technically can do everything of a Premiership Academy scholar, uses his feet well and has a decent short passing game. Popular and nice local lad as well. I get he is developing but I’m not sure of his place in our side....he isn’t presented the ball by a ball winner so trusting his passing range or creative ability to present a goal threat, has limited ability to press and win the ball regularly, hasn’t shown the desire or awareness to go box to box to present a regular threat.

Seems a great tidy player in his own age group where the physical demands are less and gets the time so he can pick a pass but producing credible and regulat performances in our midfield to justify a place at the moment are beyond what I’ve seen. Look at Brooks in Bournemouth, a maybe a year between them, but offers so much more.

Maybe we expected too much of Davies too early. He has time on his side but for me he has a lot to do to convince me he has the game to be a regular part of our first team. To be honest, I hope I’m wrong but he could be another in the line of Walsh, Forshaw, Ledson. Good but not good enough at this level.

Our very own Jay Spearing.
Was going to post this exact comparison. He’s precisely the equivalent.

Davies is in the Premier League by default as he got a chance via a youth academy at a club that is far more generous than most (often it’s needs must by throwing in youth players) at giving young players a shot in the first team, but a club that also persists with youth players for much longer than other clubs as the club is usually hovering around mid table so there isn’t that drastic need to bring in better.

Within maybe two or three games of seeing Davies, I said championship player. Never in a million years is he Premier League level. If he played for another club you wouldn’t look at him and think, “wish we’d buy him”, hence no other Premier League club would. Watching top end Championship games this season, there’s players with vastly more talent than him, and no doubt there are in the lower divisions also.

Won’t call the lad “useless”, “bang average” etc, as these disparaging labels are unfair. He’s just not a Premier League level player. He’s lived the dream and massively overachieved by playing in the Premier League, aided by the circumstances I’ve mentioned. Spearing got his chance at Liverpool at a period in time when they were hovering around seventh, a position we constantly hover at hence there is a conveyor belt of Spearings here. Davies has hit the jackpot in being at the one club above all that gives lesser talented players a chance, and then persists with them. When he leaves he will find his level at a lower league club and that will be it for him.

I don’t like Davies, I don’t think he offers enough going forwards, or even in defence, but to slag him off yesterday is just a bit harsh tbh.

Yes, he stunk the place out, but when did he last play? Fulham? Arsenal? How can a lad improve if he’s not getting a game? Throwing him in, in the deep end against a good team like Spurs was suicide. Making him stand on the edge of the box for their goal kicks was even more so.

If the lad isn’t getting minutes, he won’t improve. We’re lacking depth, but Davies on loan would be a move I’d be looking to make in January.

Did he not literally play the last half of the last match?

10 minutes against Man City isn’t exactly what I’d describe as “adequate” match practice. Last time he played was Leicester in 5.10.18, so it’s over 8 weeks.

I’m not a fan, but just seemed such a bizarre choice to play him.
