2018/19 Tom Davies

Richarlison works hard and is good enough. The names below are currently missing at least one of those qualities.

Personally I still retain hope for all of them except Kenny (who I think just isn’t quick enough for top 6 level team) however it’s make or break for a few. If Davies and Lookman have another season of standing still they could be lost and DCL has to up his goal return to avoid becoming an impact sub.

There’s no reason for anyone to hate them but there’s also no reason to be in complete delusion and pretend some of them are good enough to help us break the top 4 when currently they’re not.

Aye, the only proper weird one for me is Calvert-Lewin, he's obviously got something about him but the only reason he's playing as much is because of the clubs complete failure to get a top half table striker since 2016 when we needed backup for Lukaku, but the way people on here go on you'd think we'd spent £30m on him

Davies actually played better in games last season than the season before. He showed more discipline, made more of a defensive contribution and kept the ball better. However there are a number of important caveats to this.

1) He played significantly less games than the seasons before. It's fine for 1 season but if it becomes a trend it becomes a problem.

2) The season before saw a big drop off in performance level. To me he's still not back to his first season which is a worry. As the years between 18-20 you would normally anticipate some progression over a two year period.

3) There was some important games, signifiers if you will that he just didn't deliver in. The cup game springs to mind. Probably both the cup games. These are games where a young player needs to really go out and stamp his authority on the game and dominate them. He didn't do that and you wonder how many more chances he gets. I said as much after the cup game.

In all honesty I think Dowell's make or break summer was last season. You are now at the point with him whereby you are saying it would be extremely surprising if he broke through. The same is really true for Davies now. If he doesn't show progress on the player who played as an 18 year old next season I suspect patience will go.

Brands seems increasingly keen to bring in younger players, so there will be more players chomping at the bit to take his spot.

So the fact he wears non traditional clothing means he isn't focusing on his game?

When has he ever even remotely been in any shred of trouble?

No suggestion to me that he has an ego or he's misbehaving. If he wants to wear strange clothes then fine. It's not like he's setting off fireworks in his house or drink driving or getting into fights in night clubs

He seems like a decent bloke who just dresses a bit esoterically. Judging a book by it's cover mate, I doubt you'd like it if someone did similar to you

This is a fair point. I can imagine Neville Southall wore a whole manner of odd clothes and nobody would doubt his ability, ego our commitment. The same was supposedly true of Cantona, or to a degree Beckham. All top pro's.

Big difference between Dowell and davies I reckon. Davies has already made it as a first team squad player. He’s established. Even skippered the side a few times. He’s clearly behind Gomes, Gueye and possibly Schneiderlin for a midfield spot, but he’ll get games again this season. Personally I think he probably has 2 seasons to show what he’s capable of before the club would think of selling.

Being noticed more off the field than on it.Average player that will be moved on within the next couple of years.
In reality, I have no problem with what he does off the field (clothes, skateboarding etc.) as long as he puts suitable effort in training and during matches.

I would be the same if I was in his position - enjoying life! However, if his and others don’t have the correct balance then it could soon slip away from him.

You hear about Lingard being more bothered about his fashion label and swanning off, which ultimately has hampered his development. Lukaku?

It boils down to priorities, so let’s not get on his back as the season hasn’t started.
