A couple of simple questions you should ask yourself when you think about Tom Davies.

Would you want Harry Winks in Everton's midfield?

Would you want Lewis Cook in Everton's midfield?

I'm going to guess the answer to both of those is a massive fat no.

So why should we persist with Tom Davies in midfield.

He's simply not good enough if we want to progress. He has no attributes that would score higher than average. He wouldn't get into any other Premier league first eleven.

As mentioned by a previous poster, can see him ending up in the championship or league 1. He's probably similar level to that rat across the park from a few years ago, the little ugly fella can't remember his name. There's no place for sentiment in this modern era.

Davies came on for tired legs against Newcastle, was so abjectly poor and gave up a needless foul at the end which gave them the equalizer. He's not a good footballer at all. He can't pass, he can't shoot, he's not fast, his decision making is suspect at best, he doesn't make good runs.

It's really aggravating as he seemed to be a better footballer when he came on the scene than he is now.
I think we were seeing something he could turn into rather than something he was if that makes sense, although I will admit he was quite dynamic compared with the rest of our midfield (not hard) when he came in. I see people say he gets stick for being a local lad but I think he gets stick for not being good enough and the local lad sentimentalism is going to see him hanging around way longer than he should.

He just seems a million miles away. It would be some story if he came good. Unlikely.

Davies is a bit like John Ebbrell. He was never fully appreciated either. Not really good enough to be a starter but the type of player that is ideal to have in your squad. If he's not in the team will be disappointed but won't rock the boat either. Ultimately we would like 2 world class players in every position but it's never going to happen. I hope we stick with him as a squad player.

Why?

Because not everyone can play every week so you need players good enough to do a job. I wouldn't like to see him play week in week out but as a player to fill in he is fine.

But he's not good enough, that's the point. So every time you'd be getting him to fill in, you'd be substantially weakening the team. As evidenced away at the worst team in the league.

The players of the quality to not substantial weaken the team don't want to come here and be 4th/5th choice midfielder. If everyone was fit he wouldn't make the bench. No decent player is going to come here and kick his heels when everyone is fit. He is also good friends with 2 of our better players Holgate and DCL which will help with team spirit.

You can't seriously think we should be paying out over £1.5m a year to someone to help keep the place chirpy. Holy moly.

Davies at 21yrs of age still has a lot to offer he is still improving & will get better no doubt...

To write him off now is foolish & premature, Ancelotti will improve him, his passing & forward play do need attention, but there is a player there...

You may shrug your shoulders but be patient & we will see, DCL & Holgate have turned the corner & so will Davies with a bit of nurturing...
He's 22 tomorrow. Not exactly a youth prospect.

His contract expires on his 25th birthday.

I think there still maybe a good Premier League player in there, but to know for sure he needs a year away from Goodison and it's 38k experts reminding him he's not that good.

You could argue he's better served hanging around in and around the squad but I'm not sure. Younger players need to play.

See how he goes on loan with regular football and then decide what to do with him.

Perhaps Anna Wintour has a vacancy.

No but if we replaced him with someone else better I'm sure they would cost more than £1.5million per year and if everyone stayed fit would only play a handful of games and probably end up a disruptive influence. He's only played so many games this season because we bought an injury prone player and 2 of our other midfielders got bad injuries.
