2019/20 Tom Davies

Morgan has played his way into Silvas team, none of the other names there, including Davies have managed to do that, and Tom had chances.
Now cant even make the bench

Schneiderlin started last season in the team and was dropped after a few games. As the season went on it was Davies getting game time from Silva even in the holding role. Schneiderlin has already been dropped this season for Gbamin and now even for Delph.

All I’m saying is Davies wouldn’t have had the game time he’s had if any of those players had performed even adequately. Schneiderlin raises his game for a couple of performances gets back into the team and then just slacks straight off again. I’m hoping this season that Gomes Delph Gbamin and Siggurdson mean we don’t have to see a lot of Davies playing from the start but as long as we are capable of putting our performances like we did at Villa then Everton managers are always going to keep turning to other options in the squad and that’s Davies .

So if Klaassen had performed like you expect a 25 million pound midfielder to perform in 17/18 would Davies have had to ply the number of games he did? If Besic could perform better than a substitute in the championship would Davies have had to spend time last season playing holding midfield for us? If Vlasic had performed like the Croatian international he supposedly was why would Allardyce have had to resort to Davies to offer us some go forward from midfield?

My point is that Davies has had to play for us at times when he’s been out of form, out of position, and sometimes even not in decent fitness. If other players who were in the squad hadn’t have been so abysmal then this would never have had to happen.

I am not getting on his back but EVERY player plays in the team because someone else is not playing any better .You cannot say every time he has played he has been out of form and therefore unlucky to be picked .He is a pro and should be up for it almost always. My argument is not with him but the way you put it .The manager had to pick him quote is not an excuse,it is a demonstration that he is or was not ready .That is the crux of the complaints against him as I see it .

I'd settle for him being Premier League standard.

Which he isn't.

If playing 50ish premier league games for a premier league team that finished around the middle of the premier league isn't premier league standard, at 21, what is?

If you don't think he's good enough for Everton, thats a fair opinion. We don't want to finish mid table. But what you're saying is poo poo plop sir

I’m not casting any aspersion here on whether Davies is good enough or not. The argument you are putting forward is bizarre though. If he’s playing better than our other midfield options he’s going to be picked. If he’s not good enough that’s another question. But for everyone criticising him every time he plays there’s a question as to why the criticism isn’t being directed at the senior players failing abysmally ahead of him. With players like Gomes Delph Siggurdson Schneiderlin Gbamin in the squad we should barely see him start but I bet he does quite a bit through the season because our midfielders struggle to maintain any sort of form usually.

...Serge Gnabry just scored for Germany and a key player for them tonight. 24 years old, but not long ago struggled for game time on loan at West Brom.

I suspect many folk would’ve called him a ‘Championship Player’ a few seasons ago, but it’s proof that it’s wrong to badge youngsters because we really don’t know how things will work out.

I love Tom Davies and think he has a future here, but if everyone in healthy, he needs a loan to prove himself at the PL or slightly lower level.

He’s not good enough for a starting position by all means but Silva and other coaches clearly rate him.

He also gets a lot of stick (deservedly so at times..) for his crazy dress sense, but I doubt anyone is actually arsed.

As long as the hard work is there every day (according to Silva it is), he’ll keep improving and might surprise us one day.

I agree with this and have said as much myself, but genuine question; at what point would you say it's OK to decide whether somebody is good enough or not? You can't wait indefinitely to make a judgement, so when would you say it's OK to 'badge' them?
