2019/20 Tom Davies

That shot he had was like when somebody dreadful from the crowd is attempting the crossbar challenge.

Can any of our players actually put their foot through the ball?

This must be his best run of matches since possibly his first season with Koeman. You can see why other managers have been so reluctant to play him. At the moment the team is taking a lot of flack and rightfully so but I´d bet there´d be a decent upturn in performances if we replaced Davies with a competent centre mid who belongs at this level.

Tom was meant to play a free role and nothing else unfortunately. When we had the Barkley Tom and Rom with Coleman in form he actually worked very well in the side. Fast forward to today when he is asked to actually play a position and be disciplined... it’s just not working. He looks lost.

We've got to get him touted about for a permanent move this summer. He's somehow got a decent reputation and this whole being English thing might work in our favour! Maybe some crap team / promoted team might fancy him for 2-3 million? I can't imagine any decent side will go near him, but there is just something in my head that is telling me he'll refuse a move because nobody will pay him anywhere near what we do and he's got a far too cushy life on Merseyside.

There are times when you can tell he´s got it all figured out on what to do but just doesn´t have the ability/physique to execute it. You´d have to expect we will strengthen in centre mid this summer, which could mean the opportunity for him to move on opens up.

I think the biggest a difference nowadays is he is missing all of the Hollywood balls whereas he was hitting them in his first year. That’s a confidence issue to me. He also had players making runs and Lukaku who constantly wanted to get behind the last man so Tom was allowed to hit them. Now our off ball movement is godawful. Worst in the league.

Watching him tonight, particularly off the ball, he doesn’t demand it, he waits till it’s played to him, then needs time to decide what to do with it, there is no instinct there, no urgency or anticipation or quick thinking to move us up the pitch or put the opposition on the back foot.

Before lockdown I was thinking how he reminds me of Tony Hibbert in the sense of an almost cult like status on social media that he had whilst being nothing special as a player.

Ronny Goodlass who I like listening to on Radio Merseyside commentary, praises midfielders of the opposition of the likes of Southampton or today Villa , “Id have them here” but I can’t help think what the likes of Davies is showing, we are perhaps making them look more impressive than what they actually are.

It has dropped to a very average level. People say the forwards get no service but their movement/ability with the ball at their feet leaves a lot to be desired.

I´ll use United as an example because it looks like their forward play has turned a corner. The likes of Rashford, Martial and Greenwood just make things happen. Your job as a midfielder is so much easier when you´ve got players like that to hit. What happens if you pop it into DCL? He´ll likely control it and send it back to you. That´s harsh on him because he´s made big improvements this year but it´s the reality of our situation.

People think buying a couple of new midfielders will help but I think it´d quickly highlight the failings of our forward players and the lack of understanding they have with each other. I´m not convinced they´ve truly worked on any attacking set up for years at Finch Farm. If they have, then it really doesn´t show.
