The thing about Davies for me is that he's, positionally-speaking, as sound a player as you'lll get in that CM role. He is where he should be most of the time in a game: screening defence and breaking up play when we're under attack; in position ready for the ball when we get hold of it and up there supporting the attack. It's just that he is average at what he does most of the time: he breaks up play, then loses it; he gets on the ball, but misplaces a pass and a move breaks down.
His instinct is right in terms of his bearings on the pitch for the role he plays (which is why, no doubt, Ancelotti keeps playing him), but his execution is bang average.
He's young and he still has time to tune up the execution side of the CM role; but his instinct positionally cant be taught and he has it. Someone like Allan can help him develop a more rounded game, I suppose.
