2021/22 Tom Davies

TBH he played some one twos with through balls plus covered more area than Allen with greater speed - his position is an attacking midfielder only Carlo could attempt to make him a defensive midfielder ....

He is far better in a 3-man midfield ..... & certainly not our worst midfielder.....
Various England setups have deployed him there too. Its certainly a position you can learn, as much is about positioning. He came on against Spurs to replicate what Dacoure does...

It was coached out of him - years of not managing him properly and playing him in too many midfield roles. Unable to put a stamp in a proper midfield role, he wasn't able to develop properly. Davies has been tried in many midfield roles over the years - Attacking Mid, Box-to-box and No. 6 - either by choice or necessity. It would've been better if he sticks to one main role and provides cover for another. It could be also down to him, not being assertive to the coach. Benitez seems to be playing him further up the pitch and we are seeing him making some impact but just flashes, really.

He was never a player with world class talent to begin with but there are less talented players that went on to be really good players. I think if he was coached and managed properly over the past 4 years, we could be seeing a different Tom Davies

I just don't get the impression that he loves his football. Could be wrong like but just feel like he's comfortable doing what he does and that's it.

There's definitely a footballer there. Maybe the lad has no confidence after the endless manager circus act. I love how we constantly write off young talent. While at the same time screaming for managers to "play the kids" when things are going wrong.

A fair couple of points.

Sadly Tom has made no visible progress since when he first broke into the first team.

I have been watching Everton since 1960's, and seen some brilliant midfield players in that time.

Only my opinion, but Tom will never be more than an average talent.

TBF Davies has never been as rancid as Pointy was in that Wigan game
True although Neville was 36 and way past his prime. Should have retired at least one season earlier than he did. I worry that the likes of Davies and Holgate just aren’t showing any real understanding of their role in any game.

Yes Steve McMahon was a sensational youngster bursting into the blues side ....doh like David Johnson sold far too quickly .....too cheap ......

Tom needs a settled midfield - playing further up the pitch - his last goal was really well taken ...= dropped....

Would you after having 5 different managers at one of the most crucial times of your development, changing your role and what's expected?

No it could well be a huge factor in stunting their development. Also basically being a sub for the majority of those games will also be massively damaging. Siggs was useless for so many games but would still start the vast majority when available. Same for Keane and plenty of others. Davies needed to go on loan and play week in week out in the same position.

When Holgate went to West Brom on loan, Graham Jones, the assistant at West Brom and ex Everton coach wanted Davies to go as well but the West Brom board blocked it, wonder how he would have coped with a loan

Shame that was blocked. Would have done him good.

Do you know if it was blocked due to financial restrictions or because the West Brom board thought he wasn't good enough?

Mad how much flak he gets for half an hour on the pitch and Allan gets nothing for stinking the joint out AGAIN for the best part of 85 minutes. They are essentially exactly the same player with the same limitations and flaws to their game but people won’t admit it.

Perhaps. It did cross my mind. Only he knows. And professional footballers fall out of love for the game all the time, so it's not surprising if he's a little lost at the moment. I think offering him for swap with Sean Longstaff didn't help either. He did well last season under Carlo, but I think Davies must be feeling like he has to do it all over again with another Manager and prove that he is a useful/valuable player.
