Agree with an extension for Coleman 100%, the least he deserves but the Davies decision seems odd to say the least.
180 games now and simply not good enough.
His contract is not up for a couple of weeks anyway so why the rush with the transfer window about to open? Scared he might leave😄Why not make him available for transfer? No takers maybe? If so then why would we need him? I get all the shouts of "he can do a job", "he's cheap" etc. but don't agree with them one bit. 3rd rate player who truly should be nowhere near the squad if we are seriously aiming to not be bottom 5 fodder again next season. There has to be lower league players who can do more than this fella can, there has to be. He is a bad memory of the worst few seasons i can recall. Weak benches hurt us this season, no need to repeat the mistake.

Crazy talk!

Our fans are all world class scouts, they all say Davies is utter garbage and has no business being a footballer.

(80% of them said the same about McNeil. They'd happily give him a good rimming now)
McNeil took 6 months to improve and he did.

I’m still waiting for Davies to improve after 6years. Yeah, let’s give him time and see what he can do with a contract well into his mid 30s.

….posts like this are an absolute nonsense.

We are making a critical analysis of the clubs strategy of awarding contract extensions to players who are ineffective. It’s why we’re in such a mess, although after watching him over the years you appear to think Davies has a chance of turning his form around and being a mainstay of the team.

Where to even start with this news. If ever there was a lad who 'lucked' his way into Premier League millionaire footballer, it's this joker.

On the one hand, this initially-mindboggling decision is just typical of a tinpot club tying down a tinpot player who contributes virtually nothing; shows we do not have one ounce of ambition whatsoever. EFC have learned nothing, and the other 19 clubs might be having a little chuckle at the news.

On the other hand, from the club's POV, it makes perfic sense: retain a player who has Prem experience, can "do a job" when called on, wont kick up a fuss at being a bench player, and would be on reduced wages from his £45k p/w deal (which was hardly bank-breaking wages). Plus in all likelihood, Gbamin & Gomes will be moving on so he fills a place in the squad for a fraction of their combined ~£175k a week wages.

Bottom line: let's not go into full melt down over a backup player who will probably make a dozen appearances *possibly* signing a new deal - if anything it says more about Tom Davies ambitions (or total lack of them!) if he'd rather pick up ~£30k a week on the bench in the Prem than forge a career in a lesser league somewhere else.

I think it’s a wise move by the club. Limited funds, and he can do a job as back up. We need a squad and for low wages it’s a no brainer.
How do you what wages he's been offered ? No one even seems to know how long the contract will be for. These things are rather important, it seems to me.

Regardless of the terms, I've got serious reservations. Offering contracts to players to act as backups has a long history of turning out badly for us. Yes we need to make the most of what we've got with our limited funds, but we also need to be bringing in players who are capable of improving our first eleven.

He's not utter garbage, he's just not very good, he hasn't been able to break into 2 relegation battling sides, he simply isn't PL quality.

Who's suggesting he becomes a mainstay?

Last game of the season we had two keepers, one of whom has since left and we still had space on the bench.

He's a (relatively) low cost option.

Is it ideal? No.

It's probably better than letting him leave for nothing. He still might.

….so, we keep extending everybody’s contract because it’s a ‘low cost option’ & ‘he still might”. It means we don’t improve but at least we save money.

it truly isn’t good enough if we want to break out of this cycle.
