This is just confirmation, if we needed it, that our financial position is dire.
If we could afford it, then surely we would be buying more quality. As little as 10m should achieve that, but we simply can't afford it.

Hopefully he doesn’t sign the contract. He likely will, though. Where else will he get thousands of quid a week to “love the club and be a sound lad”? A dire footballer. 160 odd games of nothingness since that City goal. Really hoped we were going to flush out the mediocrity from this awful squad but we are sadly rewarding it’s poster boy with a new deal.

It’s crazy, if we hadn’t offered Davies a deal we could have signed Messi.
Apparently Lionel was desperate to see out his career at Everton battling relegation. He was impressed by the end of season celebration of survival and wanted to experience it in person this coming season.
But now we’ve earmarked the money for Tom, Lionel’s gone to the MLS instead!!!
Typical Everton!!!

Do the honorable thing Tom and reject the deal. Surely it'd only be a one year extension seeing as we are in a period of uncertainty and have no idea what our finances or circumstances will be in 12 months. If so, he genuinely would be better accepting a long term deal elsewhere. There's a sucker born every second and hopefully we can find one to palm him off on.

That said, this is Everton and we've probably offered a 4 year extension. Imagine that, genuinely not having to work for a decade but getting 30k a week for it.

That we are offering him a new contract?

Again, this is a player that the majority of Everton fans do not want to see on the pitch as he offers nothing, and in most cases when he has a cameo he is often losing the ball in dangerous places. Seeing him in the bench and even coming in in the lst 10/15/20 mins of games which again most likely will always be tight will cause anxiety across the stadium.

Why is this a player we want to keep?
we
What are the benefits of offering him any kind of extension?

To me he is just standing in the way of any kind of potential development within and only had a negative effect when he comes onto the pitch.

So back to my question…. What exactly are you loving about this?

Or tell me are you one of the fans who are also secretly gutted we didn’t go down this season?
What a stupid post. Firstly to suggest @Nymzee is secretly gutted we didnt go down. Ive not always agreed with him but he is 100% a blue.

And so is Tom D.

Have you ever stopped to think about why our past 5, 6, 7 managers have not only picked him but some had him as captain. Not one has tried to sell. Maybe there's something in him as Premier League footballer that those managers saw that all you doubters cant see?

Sign the contract Tom and let the heads fall off.

that’s like saying why hasn’t anyone of our previous managers tried to sell keane etc probably cos there all rubbish and they know know one else wants them , unless it’s a free or a loan with us paying most of the wages the everton special

If he accepts any kind of contract offer, he's accepting he's an outfield version of a 3rd choice keeper - there to make up the numbers, maybe get the chance to start one full game a season IF LUCKY and a massive injury crisis occurs.

I'd be very surprised if another club would even come close to matching what he's probably been offered at Everton so it will boil down to whether he wants to be a professional footballer who plays week in week out, or if he values the financial security Everton will offer him for at least another season and put that ahead of first team football.

I know people say he's an OK squad player and he's probably on low wages.

The problem I have, if he signs another contract, is we are getting someone with no drive, or ambition. Someone who is happy to hardly ever play.

All depends on the contract length and per week salary. For all the criticism he gets, given the current average wages to players, it may be economically the smart play to keep him on rather than take a risk on a player we don't know, purely as a squad player making up the numbers. Sometimes it really is better the devil you know than the devil you don't. Could well be that he's a good professional in terms of being where he needs to be when he needs to be there, and providing good advice/example to kids coming through. Much better that than some fly by night wannabe who is a bad example to the kids and creates drama within the squad. We as supporters won't know this level of detail, but the likes of Dyche and coaches that have been here for years will, and I'm ok with their decision as a result, as cringeful as it may be.

It really depends on the situation.
If we’re keeping Doucoure, Gana, Garner, Onana and Davies is there for emergencies or cup games against lower league teams I’m alright with it.

I think we all agree that the amount of improvements needed on this squad are unlikely to happen successfully in one window and I think we’d all agree the priority order should be striker, left back, striker, right back then center mid.

If this means we’ll get in a couple of strikers and full backs but have to wait a bit longer on center mids it’s ok

Not a big concern. High number squad filler. Won't be getting game time. Obiviously trains ok if Dyche gave the go ahead. He is comfortable being a squad filler.
I'm more concerned what we are going to do about our playing squad close to first 11, who we bring in and who we are moving on.
