Looks like a musketeer

If the investment in Everton is as we hope it will be increasingly difficult for youngsters to break through, the bar will be higher and they will have to be very special. That's the reality, we need a higher standard if we want to progress to the next level.

As an outsider, I can't help believing that this philosophy is what stymies the progress of so many young players in England. Most players won't make it, but clubs absolutely need to instill in their top prospects the expectation that they are going to develop into key contributors at the senior level.

When a player is in Davies' stage of development, the club should not be effectively asking if him if he's good enough, but rather pushing him to become good enough.

...I think it's a really difficult one. The fans demand success, the fans demand big money and high profile signings. Saying that, the fans also demand the inclusion of promising youngsters. Ultimately, the youngsters need to be very special and grab the opportunity when it appears. The club can push the talented but in the end only they can produce that blend of ability and attitude it takes to be a success at the very top.

Can't recall which article but it mentioned the role off when DoF is to ensure the club does not block the progress offbeat talent! We came very clear to doing it by signing Sissoko!

When he was meant to be on his way it was purely Davies that made me not want him. The club needs to ensure the long term focus is kept in mind too!

I couldn't agree more with this assessment. It's almost impossible. Ideally you want to create a one or two year window where the player is developing within the senior side and ultimately claims the starting job, but the player movement rules make such scenarios difficult. In a lot of ways, Barry and Davies are in the ideal situation, where Barry can mentor Davies to hopefully take his spot.

The one thing that has been made abundantly clear to me by basketball people is that in most cases, a club can and will shape a young player's attitude. There are always going to be players who succeed or fail in spite of their surroundings, but a club that demands winning behavior often churns out players who behave like winners.
