Tom - if you're reading this, please also check the Ross Barkley thread to see how we treat home-grown players.
That should keep your feet on the ground.

...I don't really share that view, the fans have grown increasingly frustrated with Barkley because his performances are more miss than hit. Cleverly isn't home grown and gets stick because of lacklustre displays. If Barkley positively impacted games on a consistent basis the fans would be chuffed, nobody wants him to fail.

It seems to be everybody else's fault when it comes to Barkley, it's about time he turned things around himself. Tom Davies is a bright young lad, if he's reading this (as Alan Ball said) the fans will love him if he dies for the shirt every time he goes on the pitch.

I sincerely hope this is true, but the Barkley thread does make depressing reading for anyone who wants to see him do well here. Some players are just made scapegoats by the mob mentality engendered by anonymous internet forums.
It may be too late for Barkley to escape the mob- I do hope Tom Davies doesn't have to put up with the same level of abuse.

...unfortunately Barkleys performances have been depressing, he was very poor in the Derby but that is going over old ground. He isn't a scapegoat, he's just not been very good and folk are more than justified in saying how it is.

To a point but theres fans who are on his back from the first minute now.

I've seen fellers go absolutely nuts in the alehouse if were 1 down and he makes a simple pass as they're wanting him to skin 5 players and stick it in the top bin.

...fair enough but he'll win them over if he sticks a few 25 yarders in and plays consistently well. Only he can do that and convince RK but I fear he might move down the pecking order if somebody comes in.

U must admit he has taken far more of the blame than any of the other players & please don't say that's because he has been one of the worst as Coleman has easily been as bad as has baines.

sorry that nonsense, coleman and baines while being far from great are never our worst performers every week.

...I can only speak for myself but I watch games and highlight the good and the bad. After the Derby there was actually lots of Barry criticism but I highlighted the failure of our 4 offensive players (Lennon, Barkley, Lukaku and Valencia) in pushing the Reds back and relieving pressure. Of those, Barkleys performance was abject. He was extremely poor and I think it's perfectly reasonable to say that.

From what I've seen so far davies looks like he really wants to win the ball back when we're not in possession. He also makes a good fist of this, if he doesn't win the ball he seems to break up the play. Certainly appears to have more of an old school style of play and does the simple stuff well.
Some of our true footballing greats have done the simplest things consistently with the occasional flash of brilliance.

We seem to have lost sight of this in modern football where we are mesmerised by quick feet and pirouettes by athletes who live off the multiple flicks and nutmegs from their 5 minute YouTube clips.

A rabona and a double cruyff turn in you're own half looks good for all of a few seconds but the result over 90 mins is still the most important thing.

You can win games doing the right things simply at the right time and from what I've seen of davies live so far I've found it refreshing that he tackles, passes and runs with the ball....all basics of football but missing from so many of our players games on match days.

One game & the lad ran the second furthest of any player on the pitch he worked his socks off but was awful.
His head was gone you could see it after 5 minutes his control is exceptional but he couldn't trap a 5 yard pass. Barry costs us the game not Barkley.

Barkley was screaming at him to push up

Barkley? Run? Haha.
