Tom Hanks "pretty good" four movies are?

Just read that Tom Hanks is apparently fond of saying he only made four "pretty good" movies. Got me to thinking which ones I would nominate: his own apparently include Cloud Atlas which I have never seen.

A guy in the office was complaining about Spielberg, accusing him of being overrated... so we looked up his movies and he was convinced all were likable but in his head it doesn't add up for some reason. I think Hanks is similar; excellent actor, immensely likable (and according to a producer I sat next to on a flight, actually IRL likable), easy to dismiss as blah or overrated.

Toy Story is his absolute best, but not sure whether it should be on the list.

Saving Private Ryan, A League of Their Own, Apollo 13, Big

I haven't seen Philadelphia or the Mister Rogers movie. Also hated the ending of SPR, "tell me I've been a good person..." way to go Spielberg ruining the last 2.5 hours for me with a terrible final line. Who do you think you are running a movie with an ending so obvious, Scorsese?

Saving Private Ryan is half the film that The Thin Red Line is
I couldn't agree more.

The Thin Red Line is an often overlooked masterpiece.

As for Tom Hanks films, he's just really consistent. He just doesn't do stinkers, does he? So you end up picking ones that interest you as a subject.

His best work for me is that based on real life events, so probably:

Apollo 13
Catch me if you can
Bridge of spies
Sully

What was the film that he made where he talked weirdly the entire time ? drove me absolutely insane and not watched another tom hanks film since

Obviously not Forest Gump, think it was some weird sci-fi thing.

Edit: Cloud Atlas

I've missed a lot of his movies as I went through a period of time around 20 years ago of boycotting movies if a certain actor was in it.

He joined that list due to Castaway.

A few years back I went round to my sister in laws for something to eat and she and my wife had got a DVD with Hanks in and also Sandra Bullock in ( She is on my boycott list ) after moaning for a while i said stick it on. When the end credits rolled i gladly stated " Told you so "
haha, this boycott list sounds fun, you coughing up the whos and whys?

firstly...
350

1. Gump
2. Philadelphia
3. Big
4. Shaving Ryan’s Privates

He’s obviously trying to be modest, but his body of work is unparalleled surely?

Castaway, The Burbs, Money Pit, Splash, Joe vs The Volcano, Captain Phillips, Charlie Wilson’s War, The Terminal, Road to Perdition, Catch Me if You Can and on and on the list goes. Then you have his voice work on Toy Story.
Is this serious?
My left foot
In the name of the father
There will be blood
The last of the Mohicans
The boxer
Lincoln
...

I think so much of the issue here is that SPR was first, and it was groundbreaking in cinematography. Not to mention that Spielberg and Hanks are both very likable but only film nerds even know who Malick is, not to mention nobody really likes Nolte or Penn.
Yep, and it started off (well, almost) with 20 min of non-stop harrowing action.

Thin Red Line is more have a bottle of gin and wallow in the misery of how futile it all is.

Shame about Penn, he's a fine actor but a lot of our minds were made up early on with his bad boy antics.

The first person was Tim Robbins, it was a 90's movie and god damn awful and i swore i would never watch another thing with him in. Over the years a lot of family and friends have tried to make me watch Shawshank Redemption but I will not relent on this.

Nicholas Cage was on the list for a while due to The Weather Man. Tom Cruise for about a decade. I had a spreadsheet on a old works laptop for the reasons why.

I like Nolte (unless theres some very bad behaviour or outbursts I dont know about) '48 hours' is a riot. Penn was just pure slime (good thing) in 'Carlitos way' but I'll never forgive him for his escapades with madonna, he clearly has no standards or taste. Made mention of it in the film thread, someone that turned out to be a nasty piece of work I was only to happy to boycott, with ever growing testimony against spacey its a careers work that aint so easy to let go of.
Tom Hanks though, every generation needs the fresh faced nicety of the nice bloke next door niceness. Sanctimonious sacharin drivel sells to some. well paid, well played.

Well its a wow for 'Shawshank' you're missing out there! then theres redemption for cage and cruise, what was so awful by robins in the 90's thats stuck so much to poison him to this extent? 'Jacobs ladder' is good, "Bull Durham" also good (I'm a sucker for american sports movies...) its a wow again for taking the time to document the fails and dislikes and if its in an excel spreadsheet thats points for nerding out.
