Tony Hibbert

He's a perfectly competent veteran fullback who is great back up. He's been kept out of the team because Seamus Coleman has been so fantastic. He's ideal back up. He's great with the kids. He'll probably spend his off-time during the next 2 years doing his badges, then he'll probably retire and take up a coaching role at the club working with the kids.

We've had far worse culprits than Hibbert for 'stealing a wage' over the years at Everton.

Tony Hibbert IS Everton along with Osman.

They are the only players who have come through the ranks and stayed here (Ossie's loan spells aside) and they are there to show others what means to be an Everton player and the manager appreciates their contribution to the Everton way.

Until Barkley and the promising youth talent we have break through and establish themselves, Hibbo and Ossie will remain here and rightly so.

Loyalty is a 2 way street so those who are making the shameful comments can't complain if any of our players want to move elsewhere to a so called "better" club.

Besides, there's nothing wrong about the defensive qualities of Hibbo and he may be a revelation if encouraged to bomb forward as Coleman has been encouraged to do. He might even get the goal he deserves before he retires and who here wouldn't riot if he did?

It's as if people can't see what Martinez is doing nor listening to what he's saying. His blueprint is to buy and develop young dynamic players and blend them with experienced old heads who can teach them the game and how it's played at the top level.
Just because his crossing is dire, it doesn't mean he can't read the game and give instructions, praise and the odd kick up the rear to those around him with better skills to allow them to make better decisions in the fast pace of a match.

All in all, I'm glad we've signed him for 2 more years.

Your username is Socrates yet you appreciate Tony Hibbert? For shame good sir, for shame.

He's not the greatest player in the world, but some of the comedic hate towards him in this thread is way off base.

He was great as captain of a young Reserves team vs Man Utd Reserves at Goodison last season. You could see how he was organising the lads on the field and giving them advice.

He's a decent defender but having attacking full backs who can carry the ball into the opponents half and keep possession confidently is pretty crucial to how we play.

I think it is the loyalty to/from players like Hibbo that seperates us from the likes of Chelsea.

Some will see it as a weakness, personally I think it is a strength.

Wouldn't surprise me if that sort of relationship - knowing that you are part of the fabric of Everton - is a factor in choosing to stay at the club for players such as Coleman and Baines.

Look I don't rate him, and he won't get any better at his age. I worry about squad age and quality sometimes, and two years seems excessive, I mean do we really want him here in two years time?

For me it's a sign of how skint we are, signing players who arnt good enough basically until they can't run anymore at an older age purely because we don't have to spend a transfer fee

Also with the squad being so small I think we are worried it becomes even smaller. My issue is that if we keep re signing players at an older age, eventually they all need replacing, and if most or all at once do I worry to see how we can fund it all

Perhaps it's not loyalty and simply the fact that nobody has ever put a serious offer in for Hibbo and Osman?
