Train travel and such

HEathrow to Euston isn't so bad - then direct train to Lime Street - but book as early as possible.

Do look at a flight to John Lennon though as may well be cheaper. Certainly easier.

it's difficult with the type of ticket I'm using on American, the issue isn't cost as much as time because of the limited options, but worth checking other carriers for a leg from LHR to LPL
There are not any direct flights from. LHR to LPL.

Saying that, the train from Manchester Airport (plenty of direct flights) is onky an hour and leaves every 20 min or so and costs about 20 pounds.

Any help understanding trains, train schedules, train etiquette, etc, etc, especially for Yanks?

Specifically Heathrow to Lime Street, but any general advice is appreciated.
Expect the service to be late, cancelled or crowded.

If you can reserve a seat. Its probably cheaper to buy a fixed ticket that can only be used on one service, but it's possibly sensible to buy a more flexible one. Depends when you're travelling. Anytime off peak tickets are your friend.

For a start look into getting a railcard.

This may sound silly if you are only here for a visit but it will probably save you money depending on your situation.

If there are 2 of you get a couples railcard, 30 quid and 30 percent off all tickets.

I made the money back on my first journey.

4 of us in all, any restriction on the couples railcard, like can I get 2 of these to cover all 4 of us?

starting to think that walking or hitchhiking is the best option. does @Bungle still have that panel van?

I don't think there's restrictions, for the couples one you have to be travelling together though.

Even if you got 2 of those it would save you cash mate.

I'd still go for the panel van option though.

Funnily enough I only work about 15 minutes from Heathrow so I can pop out on my lunch break and wave smuggly as you wait for your delayed train. I'll play your national anthem and gun down some innocent bystanders to make you feel at home though, I'm not a complete monster.

My shout, assuming you will have luggage, would be;
Heathrow - Tottenham Court Road on the Elizabeth Line (40 mins)
Black cab from Tottenham Ct Road - Euston 10 mins £10-£15 max.
Train Euston - Liverpool.

If one of the kids is 15 years old or younger, a Friends and Family railcard may be best. Can be loaded digitally.

See link. https://www.familyandfriends-railcard.co.uk/about-railcard/are-you-eligible/

As others have said, explaining the UK railway ticketing system to foreigners would be a challenge. The worst thing you can probably do is purchase what appears to be the most logical ticket for your journey.

If you are flying in and continuing to Liverpool the same day, a cheaper (Advance purchase) ticket is probably not suitable as it ties you to a specific timed train departure. This would potentially be forfeited in the event of a delay to your flight.

If you know your dates and arrival times, let me know and I’ll look at appropriate journey options.
