Train travel and such

That's the exact reason I've not mentioned the tube once. It's a non starter with any kind of luggage.

Tube is always packed and your fellow passengers will hate you for it. (3 stops or not)

I mean, Elizebethan line uses the tube stations anyway once it's in central London so your still lugging baggage up the escalators at Tottenham Court Road.

Heathrow express uses mainline and dumps you out on a platform. 100m from the taxi rank. Why mess around? It costs more because it's better.
Don’t disagree that the logistics of Heathrow Express to Paddington is probably the easiest of the 2 options, but at potentially £100 + cab fare, that’s an expensive trip.

Liz line to Tottenham Court Rd would easily be less than half the cost with a cheaper cab fare to Euston.

Getting to street level from the Liz Line at Tottenham Ct Rd is easy, there’s lifts, it is totally separate from the tube lines.

For the onward trip to Liverpool pre-book off peak tickets for your best guess departure time, with reserved seats. If you miss this, you can re-book seats for the next off-peak departure free of charge at the Euston station booking office.

Off-peak departure times from Euston to Liverpool are 09:30 -15:00. If you qualify for the Friends and Family railcard, all the above fares (inc Heathrow Express) are reduced by 33%.

Not sure what you budget is, but have you looked at a private hire?
Think you said 4 adults previously (or at least 4 people of full fare paying age)
Sun Transfers will do a mini bus for £631, which is by no means cheap but at £158 pp might not be so far out from the other planes trains and automobiles options. Quickest and a lot less aggro too (if you didn’t fancy hiring a car and driving yourself)

Given 2 of the 4 are my kids and I'm paying their way, I won't be opting for this but appreciate the idea.

Appreciate the help, both the serious and unserious. Got my melon twisted all of this. @Haydn 15 Feb is the inbound date. But will look at American to Dublin with Ryan Air connections.

Same rules for Ryan Air flights as trains? Don't talk to anyone at all? I've always assumed that Ryan Air is like Southwest, except that nobody pretends to be happy flying Ryan Air.

Assuming you’re coming for the Palace game? The train strikes could be finished by then, so you may be fine - normal delays aside but that’s the usual

Train will be your best option in your situ. Euston to Lime Street - look into SplitSave tickets. Won’t save you a tonne, but reasonable enough saving, especially on the Lime Street leg

looking forward to finally sharing a pint

I think I agree from what I can tell. Train to Euston (or close). Looks like the Avanti is the best train from there to Lime St, but pick a good time and route for the money. Purchase ahead and off peak if able. Either get a family pass (make sure the 14yo is always with us) or 2 couples passes so we get discounts. Find the train with tea and finger sandwiches. Talk to anybody reading FT and ask them where to store our guns and how to get tickets to the monster truck show. Sorted.

@SerenityNigh This. Have done a couple train trips up north from London recently and saved £30-50 each time iirc.

back to the train schedules it is

ok I'm back and this might be an absurdly stupid question, but if I get britrail passes then I don't have to buy additional tickets* on the days I use these passes, is that correct? some of the rail cards offer discounts, but the britrail pass seems to offer anytime tickets (seating available) to the holder.

*I suppose technically I'm using the pass to purchase the tickets, but the tickets themselves have no additional cost; someone please explain this to me like I'm a 5-year old Yank

ok, so I can has read things, and maybe I can has answer my own question by reading:

"The BritRail Pass offers you the following benefits:
  • Travel on any train in the UK without having to buy additional tickets;"

Thank you for your support / -sn

Ah you can't buy it if you are a UK citizen, sounds about right.

From looking quickly, you won't need any other tickets other than the London underground

British train companies were sold off to overseas businesses so that our fares now subsidise cheap travel for European train users. A brilliantly stupid tory strategy, but I'm sure a few of them got rich in the process.

If you book your ticket far in advance you might get a fare that's merely exorbitant, rather than one that pulls your kecks down and dry bums you.

Other than that, when they work, they're fine.

They don't work though.
