Train travel and such

Appreciate the help, both the serious and unserious. Got my melon twisted all of this. @Haydn 15 Feb is the inbound date. But will look at American to Dublin with Ryan Air connections.

Same rules for Ryan Air flights as trains? Don't talk to anyone at all? I've always assumed that Ryan Air is like Southwest, except that nobody pretends to be happy flying Ryan Air.

Everyone is always battered on Ryanair. You will meet friends for life.

If you go via Dublin swerve Ryanair at all costs.

Ryanair do I think 2 flights a day (early morning, 530am-ish and again about 930pm).

Air Lingus does 1 a day around noon time but far fewer gimps sitting around you and for not much more $ once you factor in all the RyanAir 'extras.'

The only problem with building in a self-transfer connection from Dublin is the time you will need to allow from scheduled arrival.

Notwithstanding allowing for any potential delay, you may have to clear immigration etc on the way in to Ireland, then go through security and passport control again on the way out to the UK.

Longer if you have luggage to check-in. May also be different terminals in Dublin for UK bound Ryanair and incoming transatlantic flights, in which case all the above will deffo apply.

Good points.

@SerenityNigh.stick on your LHR flight.
Fly up to Manchester. (BA do 6-8 flights a day.) if your flight is delayed the airlines work really hard to get you on the next available.

Direct train from Manchester Airport (no need to book a ticket) takes an hr and is 20 pounds ish. Get a ticket from the machine as you enter the station.

Zero faffing around with multiple trains from LHR into London to meet a train that may not even run.

back to the train schedules it is

I can get low cost tickets through American but they offer limited legs into Manchester, arriving near 7pm (1850 to be precise), but I can arrive as early as I wish into Heathrow, so I suspect we'll pick a late morning arrival then train to Euston and take whichever route is running the day into Lime Street. If we are only taking the Elizabeth into London then a cab to Euston, will we miss the commuting traffic or do we need to avoid certain hours in the morning to make the trip less unpleasant?

Yeah, after a long overnight flight you don't want to be hanging around Heathrow all day.

Honestly, either the Elizabeth line or the Heathrow Express will be fine whatever time of day. Your getting on at one end anyway so you'll have a seat.
Elizabeth line you can get out at Paddington or Tottenham Court Road and get a cab to Euston. (Heathrow express terminates at Paddington but your right off that platform to the taxi rank so probably the easier choice)

As for the taxi traffic it's London, it's quite busy.... but It won't be more than 15 min whatever station you get off at.

Complete opposite, everyone will be bladdered, however bear in mind Ryanair will likely charge you to sit down, to stand up, to use the toilet, to not use the toilet, to sleep on the flight or to stay awake.

Tottenham Court Road and Euston station are only just over a mile apart so there’s no real drama getting a cab there at any time of day.

You could actually get a tube 3 stops from Totty Ct Rd direct to Euston. The transfer to the tube is a bit of a pain in the proverbial, especially with luggage, but doable.

Depends how much luggage you are carrying. If anymore than carry-on cases I’d be getting the cab.

Traveled with my parents to visit my sister in Japan and still have nightmares about lugging suitcases through the Tokyo train/subway stations, up and down stairs... *shivers*

This may not be well known, but some Yanks are not good travelers...

That's the exact reason I've not mentioned the tube once. It's a non starter with any kind of luggage.

Tube is always packed and your fellow passengers will hate you for it. (3 stops or not)

I mean, Elizebethan line uses the tube stations anyway once it's in central London so your still lugging baggage up the escalators at Tottenham Court Road.

Heathrow express uses mainline and dumps you out on a platform. 100m from the taxi rank. Why mess around? It costs more because it's better.
