Transfer Window Thread

Were you saying this the window we signed lukaku, duelofeu, McCarthy and Barry?

No I wasn't thinking that, because he'd only been in the job 5 minutes when we signed those players. It was early days then, and that was a very good window for us.

Of those 4 players, only Lukaku gave me the impression of a statement of real intent, and even that was a loan deal at the time, which most of us wouldn't have thought would be converted into a permanent deal.
Deulofeu was an unknown youngster signed, again on loan via Roberto's Spanish links, however, it was a good piece of business. Gareth Barry I thought was an ok signing, a stopgap I thought at the time, again another loan at the time. With McCarthy, I'd only seen bits of him playing for Wigan, so was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on that one. As it turned out, all 4 of those players did well for us in Roberto's first season.

I just get the feeling that Roberto only has limited scope in the market - ok he's gone in for a few Wigan players or ones that he previously worked with. Maybe I'm dreaming a bit thinking he can actually go out into the market before the window closes and sign proven quality, i.e. a match winner/game changer that will help put points on the board for us.

But I started thinking that you often hear players after signing for a club and they talk about the manager's influence brining them to the club - that's why I'm thinking a manager like Ronald Koeman has the international respect - players know who he is and respect him as both player and manager. Ok, he may not have signed any world beaters for Southampton yet, but he has signed some very good players that many of us don't know much about and has them playing very well as a team. Imagine him at a, dare I say it, 'bigger' club? That's perhaps the Bryan Robson managing Middlesbrough mentality - players signed for him based on his name within the game, but he wasn't a very good manager. Ronald Koeman seems to be.

Perhaps that's partly why Martinez has to go mostly for loan deals to get quality in - ok, we know we don't have loads of money to throw around, but as well as the manager doing the 'try before you buy' scenario, perhaps the player may want to see how it goes first rather than jumping in?

Having said that, I'm 50/50 on Shaqiri - he could be good for us, but if he goes to Stoke, we move on to other targets - the worry is that it looks like our main targets have all gone elsewhere, and there may not be much left, unless he has something up his sleeve that nobody knows about yet...

Unfortunately they're much better with their Football transfers than their weather.

They're saying it'll be done today. I don't even know if there's the faintest of hope left sadly fellas.

They're not always right but BBC view sports as they do news , they won't run without two verified sources.
