unfortunately we've all seen him get caught out far to many times whilst playing in midfield (overplaying, getting caught in possession etc) to play him anywhere near a position where he doesn't have the insurance of someone else behind him to mop up.

Tbh I've never seen him play in the back four so can't comment but it does seem that, that is where he built his reputation.

Isn't he like 5'11 or something? That's only like an inch off Jags and taller than Mascherano, Puyol etc. (not comparing ability whatsoever here just height). Plus he's got a good jump. You don't need to necessarily be tall to be a centre half these days if you're positioning is good.

Martinez doesn't see McCarthy as that player. He is terrible on the ball and can't distribute. It's why we have Barry, Gibson and Besic.
Given Gibson's state and Barry's age, it becomes a real option. I'd take VVD over Besic.
