Come on you have to admit we losing a player who will be the best defender in the league in a few years

We are losing a player who will continue to improve (assuming he gets to play regularly) and might become one of the best defenders in years to come. In the meantime if the club chooses to sell, we have to extract every penny we can from the deal, build in some sell-on clauses and invest wisely for the greater good of our club.

For all the stick he got Distan /jags looked better together prior to last year.
Not sure what to think about stones putting in a request, timing stinks but are we getting fed a line here, we take the money he takes the heat in return for a transfer , never know what to think anymore with this lot

Oh defo, he and his agent have been working this with the Everton and Chelsea boards to take this down to the wire. No question in my mind. It has the Kenwright Way written all over it.

Still, he's not a slave and he has freedom to say no. His international status was in no doubt whilst here so his ambitions aren't stifled.

The Rooney situation was similar, but he was a child with half the club employees whispering in his ear about United...and a manager who clearly wanted to do Kewnright's bidding and move him out. This lad Stones is older and doesn't face that level of intimidation.

Really doubt we get van dijk either. Southampton with a dutch manager might influence his choice also stones saga will drag on while have feeling saints have him lined up already & sign him now Celtic are out

Yes. Look at Suarez at LFC. They rejected it; he had the year of his life.

It can happen.

Exactly mate. Martinez has said all summer he isn't for sale, if he gives in now then it tells a real story.

But we have no idea what has been said to him. Someone has been in his ear to force the issue, it could have gone from initial doscussion "we want you to be a part of this club and you'll replace JT" to "hand in a request and you'll be our number one starter".

Theories everywhere, but players change their ind like the wind. Look at Delph

Maybe so, but at the end of the day, it was his decision. He's had 2 months to think about it long and hard, hearing both sides to it. The route he is taken is disrespectful to the club, the manager, the players and the fans.

That's true. For a player who many claim is so 'grounded', he really has put one in the clubs and managers back. Still though, my position wouldn't change. I wouldn't be letting him go. If we refuse all bids outright, he'll still play for us. No players, especially one of his age would want to sit on the bench all year. Give him no say in the matter, he signed a contract to stay for 4 years.
...then we have an unhappy unfocussed player and no transfer money.

No doubt, hes stuffed us and stuck a big finger up to us. I do think the situation has changed which has made him think, oh maybe if i go i won't be on the bench. Its the only thing that i can put together in my head to make this decision logical

The Rooney transfer was different because if the gloomy tales at the time were to be believed then the financial wolves were howling at the door and our future was in doubt. With Stones, it is doesn't like look we have to sell, admittedly unable to spend in the transfer market without it though.
