http://gianlucadimarzio.com/calciomercato/napoli-da-ghoulam-a-sala-le-ultime-sulla-difesa/

Noticed this one on DiMarzio's website, translated to:

Its a tale of two defenders for Napoli as coach Maurizio Sarri looks to strengthen his rearguard ahead of the new season. Current left-back Faouzi Ghoulam has many admirers across Europe primarily Everton and PSG. The French champions see him as replacement for Lucas Digne who is heavily linked with a move to Roma.

No idea why he'd want him as he's a LB (very good one at that by all accounts) but he usually knows his stuff in terms of Italian football.

This is what I'm on about, and I'm sure that Soccernomics book probably addressed this as well. There is a school of thought that would recommend a club with the financial limitations of Everton should target players who fit into the following categories:

1 - Players who are cheaper than their talent would suggest because they are "proper bells" but can be rehabilitated with the right kind of environment.
2 - Players who are cheaper than their talent would suggest because their contract is running out.
3 - Players who are cheaper than their talent would suggest because their current club is in the midst of severe financial duress.
4 - Players who are cheaper than their talent would suggest for nearly any other reason.
5 - Players who are cheaper than their production would suggest because every other club is biased.

It's not a complicated philosophy, although it takes real commitment to execute it with any kind of sustainable success. Find an undervalued asset and nurture it until it reaches its potential.

Can't tell if you're describing QPR or Parma.

so moneyball. I think Martinez's plans are building through the youth and the academy

I get that Martinez wants to get the right type of player with the character to fit the squad which might take time or not even happen, but seriously when we have so many crocked players, players who cant play 60 minutes or make 2 appearances a week and no quality subs then you have to take measures to get people in asap.

End of last season he was going on about how he wanted to get stuff done early so there would be lots of time to integrate players and get things right, better than last preseason. But now we're in he situation were we still need at least 3 players with less than 4 weeks of the window (minus Sundays) and 4 days from the first game of the new season.
