Why not look at it being 2 players for every position, yourself and others say we dont have money to spend on "bench" players BUT the top sides dont just have one top player for every position, they have two...also theres 5+ players out next summer and likely even more e.g Howard.

Heres what it looks like based on just long term players...

GK - ?? / ??
LB - Baines / Garbutt
LCB - Jagielka / Galloway
RCB - Stones / Browning
RB - Coleman / ??
DM - Besic / McCarthy
CM - Barkley / Cleverley
AM - ?? / ??
LW - Mirallas / ??
RW - Deulofeu / ??
ST - Lukaku / ??

We add in Austin and a playmaker and with one or two more additions next summer we look pretty strong all over.
There's value looking at it this way, but it's very rigid. Why do we need two starting XIs composed of 100% long term players? Many of our players are flexible, anyway. Kev and Ross can effectively play AM, for instance. You've also forgotten Joel is a young goalkeeper and can be considered "long term."

Is there a bit of rowing back from this now?

The issue of Austin still in the frame to play for QPR tomorrow is not exactly being addressed.
The Austin thing isn't really real. It's just Twitter bollocks. No way we'd spend 15m on a striker before signing a cb and midfielder.

18 hours before kick-off for the new season and everybody's getting excited about possibly signing a relegated player for silly money....
How did World Party put it - 'How could it come to this ?'....

One player can't keep a squad up, he scored plenty of goals despite going down. He's English so it would have to be more than you'd typically expect to spend. I'd be pretty chuffed with him tbh

Echo just wrote an article about 11 minutes ago about Austin and that odds have slashed for us to sign him.

If it's written in the echo. It's true

100% this is a wind up

Yea of course it is and I almost hope it is too because I don't want us to pass up other targets on som fool's errand getting Nolito.

I think the Shaqiri rumour is true and we're just waiting on the player who doesn't want to come to the premiership. He's holding out for Dortmund however they're finding it hard to make room for him. Probably end in tears.

You're right of course. Habent included joel as he's not the same 'level' as the others...could have him as reserve of course.

Yes, some of the players can play multiple positions such as Barkley/ Cleverley/Mirallas and also McCarthy etc so we wouldnt need 2 AMs for example...

It does show however that we need:

Keeper
Winger
Playmaker
Forward

And logically a centre back whilst the kids come through...however the other kids may fill the bench as well for some of the other roles...who knows.

If we signed Austin, playmaker and a centre back then next summer lost a LOT of players (5 contracts expire) our pot next summer could go entirely on a winger and a keeper and we would have a heck of a lot of TV money to get real quality in and alot of spare wages not only for new players but also to keep existing ones happy.

Not wrong about one player alone keeping a side up. On the flip side you usually see the challenging teams with 2 goalscorers which is precisely what we need in case of tiredness, injury, suspension or even to change things.
