Jesus Christ the way some of you are going on you'd swear Austin was some sort of cross between Messi and Ronaldo.

IF, it is on, I think it is more a combination of a few things mate.

1. Martinez has seen Kone in pre season, and knows he is finished/way off being a reliable back up.
2. We are one injury away from having really no striker. Same thing I guess.
3. He has scored real goals in a PL side.
4. Our combined strike force would be circa £40m of proven players
5. It would be real money being spent
6. It doesnt seem to be dependent on selling someone, and we all know who I mean.

You're right of course. Habent included joel as he's not the same 'level' as the others...could have him as reserve of course.

Yes, some of the players can play multiple positions such as Barkley/ Cleverley/Mirallas and also McCarthy etc so we wouldnt need 2 AMs for example...

It does show however that we need:

Keeper
Winger
Playmaker
Forward

And logically a centre back whilst the kids come through...however the other kids may fill the bench as well for some of the other roles...who knows.

If we signed Austin, playmaker and a centre back then next summer lost a LOT of players (5 contracts expire) our pot next summer could go entirely on a winger and a keeper and we would have a heck of a lot of TV money to get real quality in and alot of spare wages not only for new players but also to keep existing ones happy.
Naturally agree on the needs, but I think it's too hard to predict how a young goalkeeper will pan out once you give him a real chance. I choose to remain optimistic that Joel can step up, perhaps because I'd rather not add goalkeeper to our list of transfer needs with our miniscule resources!

Austin has played for a few sides and scores over a goal every two games whilst beattie was a 1 in 3 man for southampton (signed from blackburn but not a first teamer).

So this shows i think he scores wherever he plays...the risk as always is whether he can do it for us but it seems he can based on his record, just depends if hes a one season wonder which it doesnt look like so much because he seems to be an all rounder...from the little ive seen of him.

His goals seem to be a bit like Kevin Campbell with a few Jeffers poachers there also. Those goals come from positioning of course.

Reminds me of James Beattie.

This.

It's very much a Moyes type signing though.

Circa 2006 at 6 mill perhaps. There's no way Moyes would have entertained Austin at 15 mill. He'd have tried for top quality or a value for money signing, or nothing. Moyes didn't overpay no matter how glaring the hole in the squad was.

The bigger point if Austin goes ahead and I don't think Martinez is going to spend 15m on a backup.

Our style will have to go back to a traditional 4-4-2 and with our wingers (and Lennon), our strikers in Rom and now Austin who both suit that style and our center midfielders especially Barkley he would be actually picking a formation that suits the players we have.
