Travel thread 3.0

Been to Sunderland today as it happens. I thought Newcastle had plunged downmarket until I wandered down Fawcett St which used to be the main shopping drag. Roller shutter manufacturers doing well though to be fair.
Aye funny thing is the coastal parts round there are as good as, if not better than anything newcastle has to offer.

Town centre needs completely ripped up and started again. Sunderland also suffers from having no station on the GNER line like Newcastle has. Similar to a lot of places in that area.

To be fair to the place, there is a huge amount of building work going on. A number old shops are having upper floors converted to residential apartments and a large new housing estate is being built on the site of the old civic centre right opposite the park.

There is a big new specialist eye hospital being built on the site of the Vaux brewery and a new pedestrian/cyclist bridge connecting that area with redevelopment going on between the stadium and the river. The new Sheepfold Stables restaurant/bar development has been done to an exceptional standard. We said that it will be worth a visit on our first trip home from our new gaff in Australia (if our conveyancing solicitors ever pull their fingers out)

Went there a few years ago to watch the blues with a couple of mates one of whom was a makem born and brought up in the area.
I honestly thought the town resembled Birkenhead in many aspects none of which were good
Got to say the folk we met were brand new and let me say 'the salt of the earth'.
