Travel thread 3.0

For the person with 'unusual tastes.'

Just back from Javea in Spain , went via Liverpool to alicante , no bother with passport queue at either end, supposed to be a ten minute wait in alicante , but they just opened another gate and you virtually walked through.
Javea itself was very quite during the week , never seen it like that before, have been 5 times, talking to a few that lived there full time said that plenty of places were shutting down, but opening again up just as quick.
The people there warned us the last few years a lot of young Spanish had arrived in July and August the last two years and it was very busy and full of late night noise ect and not what they were wanting for the resort, funny enough same message I got from bar owners in Menorca in September,
They want the British/Dutch ect to return spend more and quicker and not as prone to anti social stuff till dawn.
A few of the main bars got shutdown by the police while we were there, due to on going problems with local laws, all owned a group of Brits, locals said it was because of noise last summer and they had ignored warnings to shut.
No messing about with the cops over there just marched in said everyone go, didn't even give time for people to pay the bills ect.
Funny enough the night club responsible for the noise, just opened up on Friday night anyway.
Enjoyed the week , but it has aways been a very mixed place, Brits, mostly Spanish families, Dutch , French and Scandinavian, not to sure they will go if it becomes a weekend place for young Spanish people, don't think I will be going again if it goes that way, to old for all that.

you are overthinking it mate,
just turn up early and take you pick of seats,it will be half empty if its a week day.
i take it its an east midlands train, you should always book direct with the train operator, its easier if something goes wrong,
trainline probably dont have access to the east midlands seat reservation system and its so far ahead they arent even available anyway.
that hour standing from crewe in 2006 must have hurt!
Thanks for your good news response, nc, but I'm wondering; What if we take seats that have been reserved by other passengers?

Or will it be obvious that they aren't just anybody's? Am I still overthinking it?

This is our fourth visit to the UK since 2000 and I admit I probably do pay too much attention to every detail before we go.

you really should have waited until east midland trains released advance tickets, pre covid it used to be 3 months now its approx 6 weeks,
you can reserve a seat during that process.
i hope your train isnt on august bank holiday or you may find it doesnt run at all,due to engineering works.
assuming its on a weekday it will be half empty and fill up when it arrives in manchester, the reservation information is next to the seat.
if you get to limey 15-20 mins before departure you get the seats you want
or if you go to the office in lime st the day before or contact east midlands trains customer service, they will give you seat reservations to put your mind at rest.

Thanks mate. It's august 29 which I believe is a bank holiday. I have no idea how UK rail works and found the train times on Google
and just picked one.
We get to Liverpool on the 26th and I'll ask about it at Lime St when we get there. I'm hoping Everton are at home on the 27th and if we are I'll try for a ticket when they go on sale. My wife and daughter can go shopping. Thanks again.

I've got another potential problem with train tickets. I've booked three tickets from Liverpool to Nottingham in late August and asked specifically for the 9.51 Lime St train. The tickets were sent - by Trainline - but they're Anytime, not the 9.51 and I wasn't given seat numbers.

I looked at that train again and it has only one ticket left for sale. So, if we get on that train will we definitely get seats? Or is there a chance that we might have to stand all the way? Is it first in first served?

We had a train from London break down at Crewe in 2006 and finished up standing all the way on a train we were switched onto.
It says anytime because you can use it on any of there services on that route all day.
You might not be able to book seats you can't on all services, but if you can at any train station you can book them free , if you ask them, saying that mention train line and they will more than likely tell you to ring them, station staff not very helpful to people putting them out of a job then wanting them to clear up Trainlines mess.
Don't know why anybody uses them , absolute load of messing about if you need any changes ect. The routes they send people on are crap and definitely not cheaper.
Better going directly to the company that runs the train directly.
You will be fine getting seats midweek anyway.
If its later on in the year check there are no Rail strikes because they are more than likely on the way and will cover all the rail services.

The ones reserved have a it on them sit anywhere else.

Anyone have recommendations of stuff to do in Singapore? Will have 5 days there in November. 2 days will probably be taken up by the Gardens by the Bay. What else is a must see/do?
