US Army and Apple - say it ain't so?

Ghost how could you forget your greatest Mac-ally in the war against boringness? The recent experience of my mac getting a bit damaged was not enough to turn me off, especially cos they were so great about getting it fixed (thanks for the tips from everyone in that other thread i'd created, i've been meaning to bump it to thank you all but right here should do i suppose(y))

i also found out that macbooks have a sensor inside that detects sudden motion and momentarily stops the harddrive when that happens to prevent damage, so even though I needed my mac fixed, it may have been much worse without that feature, and i wouldn't have been able to back up all my stuff.

as for this Army business, its about time they tapped into literally the biggest cash cow in the world. US military expenditures make up 41% of total world military expenditures, who wouldn't want to do business with them?

I really hope you're taking the piss...

Slightly tongue in cheek at the end, but as for the quality; try picking up a macbook pro and then compare it to any windows laptop. Honestly I've never found anything comparable.

On the hardware side of things, possibly the main reason why Intel paired with Apple is because Apple for the most part don't use old technology. Meaning that Apple are a good source of sales for Intel on the chips it would normally only supply to early adopters, for example the next Mac pro (desktop tower) will use a 6 core Xeon. The 6 core Xeon will be supplied to apple before it's shipped to other computer manufacturers.

Where Apple possibly lets itself down, and ultimately many consumers is that they don't offer a low end product, these usually require the use of older processors. Neither do they offer great performance where there is a conflict between design and function, the iMac springs to mind. The use of predominantly laptop components for a desktop machine. With Apple it's all about the design first, and of course they simply don't do entry level equipment/ machines.

Apple are badly overpriced, I've just bought a news laptop and mobile phone and seriously considered Apple for both - largely due to brainwashing from le Ghost.

I ended up swerving both as they just didn't offer value for money, I was prepared to pay top dollar but there is no point. Compare the iPhone 3gprs to the HTC Hero, its at best marginally better but more than double the price.

Mate, you have boight a laptop to surf the net on and check email? Am I right? or perhaps some tunes also.

I buy a mac because I am a designer, coder, I sometimes have 10 applications open at once. Apple is expensive, but not over priced. You pretty much get what you pay for. Longer battery life, better design, they are actually very environmentally friendly.

PC's in general are thrown together in order to meet demand. Mac's are put together with care because they are targetting a niche market.

To be honest anybody who gets an Apple for low level stuff is either very rich, or is getting them because of image.

If your surfing the net, and perhaps listening to music get a PC. You don;t need an Apple. Gaming also - get a PC, or a PS3.

:)

Ah crap I'm going to disagree with a fellow Mac user! Nightmare! I got my first mac because I was petrified of getting viruses and spyware and losing my investment. For the most part i surf and download stuff, as well as the whole multi tasking thing with lots of apps open etc. The main thing i found was that Macs just last longer, and being able to download things without having to worry about viruses etc is bliss!

The net was the main business focus of the original iMac and for me it was a winner!

Now i'm probably guilty of being a sucker for the looks, as I'm sure a cheaper piece of equipment with linux on it would be just as fine for hassle free surfing etc

I don't know what multi tasking is like on Windows 7, but on a mac it's pure bliss! XP is just unbearable by comparison

Not only a fellow mac user, but Ghost! You've disagreed with Ghost!

My wife bought an ibook a while ago, the main purpose was to run a database. There is no decent database software for macs, the one she had was developed in MS Access which is not available for mac. The ibook has been sitting in a corner of the bedroom for a year unused. Wasted £1100... (she bought it for the looks).

I know, what on earth was I thinking disagreeing!!!

There is something comparable to MS Access, which is a pretty simple relational database tool, it's called Filemarker. Filemaker an import MS Access databases. This solution might work, but it might also throw up some issues too, it's worth a go.

I do agree though, database programmes on the mac are not the best

It's very easy to get around this though, you can either use Crossover, VMware Fusion, or Parallels

For VMware or Parallels you need a copy of windows, for crossover you don't.

If you PM me I can possibly give you a freebie, fully licensed nothing illegal, copy of filemaker 8. I used to use it in a previous job, it's licensed to me. I have three licensed for it of which I use none, I don't even think I have the software loaded on my computer anymore, in fact Im pretty sure I don't.

I might be able to help with the codewever option, I used to have legitimate licenses for it but i'm not sure if they work any longer. The company had a free registration process at one point, which meant if you registered before a certain date you didn't have to pay for the software.

Parallels, can't help

VMware, possibly, but you'll need to be quick. The licensed RC version (Beta licence) of the software is still available, I have the link. I'm not 100% sure of the legality of this one mind you, but I doubt it will be up past October 27th ish, which is when the RC version is released to the public. It's not that expensive to buy mind, circa £50, if you buy the download version directly from the states.

Thanks for the advice mate. Problem is I think the machine is a bit old now. It's running OS9/OSX, can't get parallels to load. Can't remember the spec but I don't think any of the newer OS's will run on it. So I think it's defunct! :(

OS9 would make it circa 8-12 years old, it should still run Filemaker without a problem provided it has OSX on it. The old PPC hardware was very reliable, much more reliable than the Intel stuff. The only problem with it was that initially it was faster than anything the x86 architecture could offer, apple even made these funny snail comparisons, but then they got bit in the ass when Intel brought out the P4 chip and spanked Apple quite badly.

Those older machines though pretty much go on for almost ever
