USMNT

Decent win last night. Gregggg playing Tillman and Paredes was a disaster, Tillman especially poor, once some competent players were put on the match was over.

So I believe we were somewhere around, "Gregg Berhalter isn't worthy of shining Gareth Southgate's shoes," and this was in no way praise of Southgate. It's saying that an attack managed by Berhalter looks like it's executed by dead frogs hooked up to electrical current.

I would like to forcefully put down the Klopp to USMNT idea. I think he would be a terrible international manager because dozens of countries park the bus and he wouldn't have the players long enough to implement his steroid inhalers renowned fitness program.

I think an international manager needs to the tactically flexible. He’s made a career by being tactically inflexible in the best way possible. Same with Pep

I would describe it a little differently in that for me it is more about understanding that you don’t have the time or players to make the system perfect. What I agree with is Klopp doesn’t have that imo.

An international manager has to assess the talent pool, figure out what you have and don't have, and come up with a system to get the most out of your pool.

With the typical American fitness and work rate, Klopp might fit tactically, but they wouldn't have the stamina necessary to carry it across 90 or 120 minutes because he can't get the speziale brau down them.

I could be wrong but I'm also of the opinion that ideally an international manager should have some kind of connection to the football culture of the country they're managing. I say that having witnessed 2 foreign England managers, who had never managed in England previously, make a mess of the England job.

I think the deeper point here is that a lot of international management is based around quickly pulling together a group of players and having them buy in, work at maximum capacity and feel connected to each other. I don’t believe that’s only accomplished by an insider, but it does matter. Now as far as the US goes I’d rather see them overcorrect and get a competent football coach who can’t quite get the culture going because Gregg was the ultimate culture guy and it’s been a mess.
