USMNT

100% a "Thanks Obama" for losing a fair and open process for hosting 2022, right?

As far as player rotation goes as a cause, I suspect you're giving Berhalter too much credit.
This absurd schedule is much more down to COVID pushing everything back by several months though, right? If anything, a November WC would originally have allowed the qualifiers to be spaced out even more.

Sarcastically saying “Thanks Obama” is a common expression in the US when complaining about things that are completely out of your (or anyone’s) control.
This.

It was a massive meme here during the latter half of Obama's presidency, and it played on the tendency of Americans to blame (and credit) the president for ]I]everything[/I]. As an example, a large number people are blaming Biden for present inflation even though he didn't cause it and has very few tools with which to do anything about it. In this case, Obama got involved in the bid process, but was hardly responsible for blatant FIFA corruption.

As to the point you raised with respect to coronavirus being the cause of the issue and the extra time in the calendar due to the Qatar schedule, I suspect you're at least half right. I would guess that we would have seen deep changes to the qualifying process if FIFA had been scheduled to put the show on in June. Whether that would have done anything about present fixture congestion is anyone's guess.

The irony is that he's complaining about fixture congestion as the cause of rubbish football, yet no one complains when the World Cup holds fixtures every four days. I suspect that part of the problem is that the standard of CONCACAF football remains rubbish. It's improving, to be sure, but that process takes time.

Neither the US nor Canada can go from also-ran to world-beater in a day, or even four years. We have to get on the level of the Brazilians technically, the level of the Italians defensively, and the mental level of the Germans, if we want to beat them consistently. That is a tough ask.

Very interested to see if Gregg continues his pattern of picking awful lineups in game 2. I fully suspect he will be starting Arriola again. Mostly curious to see the midfield rotation. Think we’ll see Acosta, but I hope that doesn’t mean 2 DMs with both him and Adams. A point is ok today but given Davies is our for Canada and their home field advantage is lessened, we really should be expecting another 3
