Yes, I know, we didn't care. But now enough people care that it should be literally inevitable that we make every major football tournament from now until the end of time...unless FIFA decides to make us join UEFA or ...whatever the South American federation is...that may not be a bad idea actually - give CONCAFCACAF's spots to South America and just have a New World Federation.

The US's road to the World Cup is about as dramatic at this point as Real Madrid's fight for survival in the top flight.

I would actually be all for that idea. The combined confederation would be about the same size as UEFA, and would be the closest we'll ever get to having a talent pool to rival it.

Would be great for the US to more regularly play against the South American giants.

Copa America would be a big, awesome tournament on par with the Euro.

Would be one hell of an away fixture for Seattle heading down to play the Boca Juniors though. :P

Actually I'm starting to feel less and less worried about Besler/Cameron. Only problem I have with defense is if Chandler or Yedlin come in. Beasley isn't Baines or Alba but he won't self destruct.

There is also a question, if Mix plays well enough what happens? Dare we shuffle things around and have a front four of Jozy in front of a mix of Dempsey, Zusi, and Diskerud? Obviously Zusi would be out wide but Mix can Make Things Happen.

Would certainly make things more interesting. I'd probably feel bad for the Honduras's/Costa Rica's though. They'd have a hell of a time getting to the World Cup. Although, if we're just throwing stuff at the wind - don't give all of CONCACAFAFAC's places to the new group - leave one behind, loop the Caribbean with Oceania, give that 'Island' group 1.5 automatic berths...

Seems like it would be more fun all around. I dislike the groups with one or two clear favorites and a bunch of cannon fodder, would be nicer to group partially by ranking at least.

Basically just come up with a reason to put Mexico and the US in South America.

I don't think it'd be entirely hopeless for them. The combined Pan-American Confederation would have 8 qualifying spots (and I reckon that over time a combined confederation could swing it more in their favor).

Costa Rica, by ELO Rating, is the 9th best team in the New World. It'd be a stretch, but they could still qualify. As for everybody after the CONCACAF 2+1... Scotland and Ireland barely have a prayer of qualifying for the World Cup. Why should we basically guarantee a spot for Panama, Honduras, or Jamaica?

Your argument would better suit Luxembourg or Andorra, but point made. I was thinking we'd be guaranteeing a spot for Honduras, Panama, Costa Rica, or New Zealand.

I do like the idea of a Pan-American Conference, it makes more sense, if for no other reason than the nations are geographically more widely varied so there is less competition than in Europe, which I believe is part of the reason that it's less interesting to follow.

As long as Beasley is the LB, I'm not as concerned. Besler needs to settle in a bit more I think, he really needs time in this next match plus the scrimmage. Mix should be at the top of the diamond if we play that formation, imo. But it's not going to happen because for some reason it's been decided that Jones must be on the field at all times.

This is just meaningless detail, but here's how I rank North American footballing nations:

USA, Mexico: Nailed on to qualify. National catastrophe if they're not in the World Cup.

Costa Rica: Should always qualify.

Honduras, Panama, Jamaica: All have a chance of nicking the last spot or Costa Rica's, but do not expect to qualify regularly. This group fluctuates, sometimes Trinidad and Tobago and Cuba are in it too, depending on the cycle. Canada should be here, but they're too busy sucking.

Everybody else: Luxembourg and Andorra-level crap.

Where I'm going with this is that in a combined confederation, everybody just gets pushed down a tier. US/Mexico should always qualify, but it's not the end of the world if they don't. Costa Rica is outside looking in. Honduras/Panama/Jamaica would need a golden generation.

The vast majority of CONCACAF though.... Well, your chances really can't get any lower than zero, can they?
