Fascinating on the Bayern bit. I see quite a bit of it around here. Maybe it's a regional thing, Wisconsin is known for its large ethnically German populace.

Not arguing with numbers obviously, but anecdotally around me I see Barca, Arsenal, and Bayern as the most common.

Well, my stats/facts are four years old...so there could've been a shift.

*EDIT...those figures were national figures...not regional

Most North American sports culture is lame anyway. I have no problem with borrowing from elsewhere. There are maybe some good things you could incorporate college football fandom, but that's about it.

I do have a strong distaste for American "futbol" fans who hate on the domestic game, though.

An American club doesn't have to be your number one (it's not for me), and you don't have to pretend it's on par with Europe, but you should at least care. Even if it just means going and sitting with the Cactus Pricks every now and then (@obc ;)).
Why?

I got into the sport through the Premier League, I've never lived near the MLS. The Railhawks have....You'll Never Fly Alone....shudder.

So why should I care? Honestly?

I hope it succeeds as a sport, because I like the sport, and it'll be cool if one day the MLS is a top-class league. Still won't have a team over here. Why should I?

It's the shameless copying by MLS teams that is really to be despised, although the WSJ doesn't seem to factor this in his article. I agree that nobody is required to support an MLS squad, but I think it's good to support the local team. But if I lived near Real Salt Lake or Sporting Kansas City I might have different views on this. Dallas 'til I die? I'll proudly adopt the Hoops but not the jarg slogan.

It's not that I entirely disagree. I may support the Railhawks if there was ever any hope of them, you know, doing something. The lack of promotion/relegation absolutely kills it for me. I'm not a huge American sports fan, and I feel like that may just be a reason why.

The Railhawks will forever exist on the step below 'Major League' and considering that the MLS isn't exactly top class, it means the football is pretty awful.

And the faux-European stuff is ridiculous (rather humorous from a man that types things like 'jarg', 'boss', 'gash', and 'football'). It doesn't help grow the game in the US, it puts off most Americans and makes them think all soccer fans are pretentious Euro-wannabes.

That's all I'm really asking for. I don't really have any domestic allegiances either, except possibly DC United if I do indeed end up moving there.

There's a group pushing to get a USL Pro or NASL team in Milwaukee right now. This may seem way too nuanced, but I'll only seriously get into it if it's an NASL team... The quality of play is a little bit better, and the fact that USL has MLS reserve teams in it kind of kills it for me.

As for promotion/relegation, it's never going to happen. Big money changed hands to get those MLS franchises, and the court cases would follow. The only way I can see it happening is if USSF and/or FIFA knuckles down and enforces it. Which, I don't think they have the power to do.

My hope is that one day the quality of play in NASL improves enough that those clubs do regularly win the US Open Cup, and it maybe forces us to have a conversation about promotion/relegation.

My position is like yours, there's no MLS around me (do you think I'm going to support a Chicago team when they're our archrivals for every other sport?), and there will never be MLS around me, because Don Garber thinks Atlanta and Las Vegas are great sports towns.

Never will be promotion/relegation in the US. Sure, that creates a sense of security for a few poor owners, but by and large* it creates balance and parity that provide for better competition and sharing of honors than you see in soccer across the world.

*Outside of the NBA of course, but that's down to the players and not down to the owners.

I dig it.

I just get annoyed with people that seem to think I must support MLS or American teams because of my geography. As you well know, Everton chooses you. I was chosen by Everton.

I think of the MLS about what I think of Liga MX - i.e. I don't.

I know promotion/relegation won't happen in the US, and honestly, it probably shouldn't. Our systems work very well for the leagues over here in general. I'm not saying they should have promotion. It's just without it I don't really care so much, just like I don't care about American football, baseball, hockey, or basketball.

Leagues thinking Atlanta, Vegas, Miami and the like will ever embrace a sport is really quite funny to me. I suppose Miami at least has the excuse of a large Cuban population...but Cubans tend to like baseball...and how has that worked for the Marlins?

I don't think parity is driven by a lack of promotion and relegation. It's driven by salary caps and squad limits. (Which, admittedly, are far easier to enforce when the owners know they'll get their payout).
