I think refs should be made to explain after the match why they made the particular call when reviewing VAR. No longer can they use the excuse
"the game moves too fast, I missed it".

Dont even have to be in person, just a simple written report explaining.

It will take time but they will figure out a way to get away with mistakes in favour of the sky favourites .
If it's down to the ref to decide when to use it, decisions will all go one way, we know who's going to benefit before a balls kicked.

Some of the tin foil bills for posters in this thread must be enormous. The conspiracy posts are almost as crazy as the “if it won’t fix absolutely everything I don’t want it” shouts.

Rule says “ deliberate” so even if your hand moves toward the ball by accident. It shouldn’t be given. There is nothing to say that if you gain advantage that it’s hand ball, it’s deliberate. In theory if richy smashes a shot and if hit niasse hand and went in then the goal should stand as long as he didn’t deliberatley handle it

Where have you seen that because I was always lead to believe it was if the ball hit the hand in a unnatural position.

Regardless from watching games in Europe, listening to the commentary and the pundits before, after and during the match a hand ball is a foul deliberate, unnatural or otherwise. Why do you think so many forigne defenders stick their hands behind their back when blocking a cross and defending in the area.

But we don't play in any other league in Europe.
Opinions innit
VAR as used in the WC was aggreived player driven
If it gets in the Prem in this form it will make already weak Reffs even weaker in favour of the big boys

This is the entirety of the 'handling the ball' rule on the FA's website:
Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with the hand or arm. The following must be considered:
  • the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)
  • the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball)
  • the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an offence

I don't see it favouring anyone I see it helping the refs make the right decisions that they can't make because the game is so fast.

I know the rule for hand ball and ball to hand in England but my original point was about the world cup "hand ball" incident. My point was the decision was right because that how the rest of the world views the rule. Like when we used to play in europe and go flying into a tackle and the player would get sent off or booked when it was neither in the English game but in the European game it was. An those are the rule you have to play by in international competitions.

Not a fan because it will be brought up as a topic for every decision, "Oh, if they used VAR for that then..." (Disclosure: I don't know the full parameters that the PL will use it in)

Also, I'd rather the fourth official was responsible, maybe a fifth so he's away from crowd or bench influence. The last thing you want is to slow the game down as the Ref runs over to the Telly to watch a replay.

I have sympathy for refs, so I'm for anything that helps them.
How many of us have seen a foul a penalty and the like and our first reaction was proven wrong during slow motion replay.
Granted we're not professional referees.

We all play under FIFA rules...FIFA rules state Deliberate hand ball
Your point is mostly null and void

"Unnatural position" is in the guidlines given to refs in order to help them determine if the contact between hand and ball/ball and hand was deliberate. Although i believe there is talk that the word "unnatural" may be taken out at some point because it's stupid. However, i think what they intent to replace it with isn't much better, possibly something like "unavoidable".

Your hand can still be in an "unnatural position" and the ball can hit it without it being a foul. But i think recently refs are instructed to give a foul if the arm is away from the body or above waist height, hence why the one in the World Cup final was given, even though it shouldn't have been. The governing bodies want more goals, so penalising more handballs in the area means more pens and more goals, even though many of them go against the very rules of the game.

I'd say defenders put their arms behind their back like that to try and take away any risk of a pen being given, i do when i play. I shouldn't have to by law, but if my arms are by my side, an attacker crosses and it hits my arm completly accidently but the ref gives a pen then there's nothing i can do.
