Violence at the games

“Two hundred and fifty Russian fans repulsed an attack by several thousand English and forced them to flee,” state news service Vesti reported.

“English fans started the fight by attacking our fans, but 250 Russians from different corners of our country did not flinch and repulsed the attack of the heavily drunken islanders.”

That makes 'it was Chelsea' look positively accurate.

That reads like a chicoazul match preview.

@chicoazul lauding the violence and laughing because the England fans were ambushed and one instance stabbed is a new low on this forum.

He does this in every international tournament.

He has serious issues and needs psychiatric help.

Coming from someone who posts in the depression thread and supposedly have mental health issues of his own I find it distasteful that you'd level such a comment at someone.

You can see they're well versed in this stuff the Russians. Basically tactic of isolating a single target then overwhelming them with numbers indvidually. Almost like 'fire and manuouver' military practice. You get those in the vanguard that march in and finish it off with overwhelming force.

Other than any innocents of any nationality caught up in the violence, there's not a single group be it fans, locals, authorities or footballing officials that come out of this weekend with any credit at all.

It's the culmination of seriously bad planning, bad policing, UEFA incompetence, idiotic behaviour by many English fans, organised hooliganism and locals protecting their turf. Sadly as a result many innocents get dragged into the resulting melee.

It has to be said that those English fans, drinking for hours on end, singing vile and abusive songs aimed at locals, Russians and Muslims, they're behaviour getting louder and more obnoxious by the minute are complete and utter idiots. By all means go to England games, group together and have a laugh, but why draw such unnecessary attention to yourself with such foul and disrespectful behaviour? It's as if it's a deliberate policy to tick off as many of the local population and the authorities whilst in the full knowledge you'll inevitably draw in the trouble makers, the locals taking affront to the desecration of their territory, and rival fan groups itching for an opportunity to put their prepared tactics into use.

How the authorities cannot recognise this pattern and put either preventative, preemptive actions in place, or at least calming measures during the day who knows?

UEFA - why put such a high profile game in a place already full of tension and with a history of previous violence and play the game in the evening therefore allowing a full day's drinking and violence to stoke up the atmosphere? Why not insist on a lunchtime kick off like the Police sometimes do here, even laughably in the past for Derby games?

The threat to the English and Russian FA's is just laughable. UEFA's executive should be looking at their organising committee and the French authorities and demanding plans to ensure that this doesn't happen again, or at least plans to deal with developing situations should they arise.

It's been a bad weekend for the English as yet again we're saddled with the reputation and image of those idiots in Marseille, but it's a far worse weekend for the French authorities, for UEFA and particularly the Russian footballing authorities in the lead up to their WC in 2018.

I think the 'locals defending their turf' angle can be widened to include some local French fans wanting to have a go as well.

Late in the day kick-off time, booze flowing on the day and for days before hand and a whole army of England fans out there without tickets, wanting to be there for the beer and the party. And the choice of Marseilles where there has been trouble with our bonehead fans before. A real lack of foresight and planning here.

Spot on @The Esk

Some England 'supporters' need to take a seriously long and hard look at their behaviour and maybe just decide to stay at home in future.

The French authorities seem to think that the arbitrary use of tear gas will solve problems, it won't it will exacerbate them.
UEFA and the game scheduling certainly warrants some serious examination.

As for the WC in 2018, assuming England qualify I dread to think what might occur and I'd suggest supporters boycotting it... to avoid trouble and hurt the Russians by denying them the revenue.

I've been to Russia (Moscow) twice for ice hockey games and it is a great city to visit, but when it comes to policing sporting events, they take no prisoners whatsoever. They turn out in numbers and take no abuse or stupidity from anyone.
And it's the same in Kiev (Ukraine), another terrific city to visit, but when Dinamo or the national football team is playing, the local gendarmerie lose whatever sense of humour they have for the day and any stupidity is dealt with swiftly and often harshly.

Some 150 Russians were behind much of the violence in Marseille ahead of the Euro 2016 match between England and Russia, French prosecutors have said.

Ten people, including six Britons, three French and an Austrian, face an immediate trial, Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin said.

But he said just two Russians had been arrested, both for a pitch invasion.

About 35 people have been injured, including four whose conditions were said to be serious, after the violence.

Police deployed tear gas to disperse football fans on a number of occasions during three days of clashes in Marseille.

On Saturday England Russia drew 1-1.

'Extremely well trained'
Mr Robin told a news conference: "These people [the Russians] were well prepared for ultra-rapid, ultra-violent action.

"These are extremely well trained people."

Most of the 35 people who were injured in the fighting were English, Mr Robin said, adding that two Russian nationals were being expelled from the country.

A 50-year-old English fan is in a critical condition with severe brain injuries after being attacked by Russia supporters armed with iron bars.

A 16-year-old Briton was among those arrested and charged with throwing bottles during violence in Marseille.

Mr Robin said the British teenager was in custody and that he had personally spoken to tournament organisers Uefa to have his future tickets cancelled.

Twenty people have been arrested in connection with the violence.

Has it always been this bad or is it just being highlighted more? This whole thing is an absolute shambles right now.
