2021/22 Vitalii Mykolenko

I won't write him off after a couple of games and I won't write him off even on his performances so far. I don't think he has been great but don't think he has been all that bad. He has been one of many under performing players. To judge him on a couple of games is silly. The ones who are judging are probably comparing to a peak Digne whereas I am comparing to the Digne of the last 18 months. He still falls slightly below the recent Digne but not by much. This lad will take a while to settle and him coming from a better team than Everton could not have been easy for him either.
 
I'm not impressed if im honest, its his 3rd game and he's done nothing to make me think he'll ever be anything other then a average defensive FB.

My main issues with him are hes slow and he quite clearly can't cross a ball to save his life and crossing and pace are the two most important traits in a modern day FB. The fact hes our only left footer and we're forced to play out swingers in on the right hand side off corners speaks volumes to me.

I hope to god I'm wrong about him and he just needs some time but looking at him he'll never be more then a average defensive FB.

Would of been better to just train Godfrey to use his left foot and keep the £16m and £3mpa in wages.

On the plus side he did block a cross and its rare one of our FB's do that.

We really won’t see much from Mykolenko until he has settled. It could take 12 months. Young players need time and patience. Young players from abroad need more time and patience.

Patterson has been written off and he hasn't even kicked a ball for us.

Mykolenko will not be at the same level as Digne, he is young and still learning.

From what I can see, we have signed two raw fullbacks who will develop and occupy the positions for years.

Exactly.
This season is a write off,.other than maybe a cup run. Let the 2 lads chill, and learn their trade from 2 superb full backs coaching them.
Give them time to mess up and learn from their mistakes and let's see where they are at the start of the next season.

With Patterson, If he is not ready, then so be it. He will be learning loads in training.
They may not end up world class, but I bet both of them will be solid performers.

I'd say thats a great advantage but not the reason he fails or not. We could get anyone playing there and say here is cole and baines to coach you. Now be brilliant. I always remember glen hoddle saying when he was player/manager at swindon that he could coach them all day long. Some just were not a certain level.
He'll either be good enough or not because of what level he is. I'm more hopeful than confident if honest. But his Everton career and the whole benitez thing was a right sh!t show to walk into.

The money we paid is about right for a reserve left back or a player we can use away from home or at home against teams like City and the rs. Hopefully we can buy a first choice left back in the summer. There's going to be a fair number of ins and outs over the summer in pretty much every position.

Its about right for a top 6 side its absolutely criminal for us. We can't afford to pay that fee or those wages on someone you want to replace in 6 months.

For at least 6 months of that 18, yes.

If you can't see the clear downgrade we've made, for literally no reason, then that's on you.

But, we're in a crap financial situation so Mykolenko coming in on cheaper wages is good in that sense. But we're gonna need to give him time. Hopefully he can get that. I think he did some good things yesterday and didn't really do anything wrong, he just looks a bit lost at times.

Hardly played and people talking about failure and blame. What planet???
 
As so many have decided on minimal evidence and allowing him zero adjustment time and even less benefit of the doubt that he’s at best a future sub-par reserve perhaps we should just lock this thread and revisit this time next season by which time we might be able to make a sensible determination one way or the other?

There's a difference between a squad player and a reserve. We lack squad players.
